Question about DEXRON VI

Hi Everyone. Great article about the fluids!!

I have a question I hope someone can answer. I have a 2005 Nissan titan, 60K miles. I changed the transfer case fluid with DEXRON VI (Nissan calls for D Matic ATF or Dexron III). When I got the DEXRON VI, I read it was replacing DEXRON III.

I drove the truck for 67 miles with DEXRON VI in my transfer case. Then I found out that DEXRON VI is NOT to be used in manual transmissions or transfer cases. GM actually has warnings and bulletins posted saying that a failure will happen.

My question is, why would Dexron VI cause your transfer case to fail, when it is suppose to be better?

I drove with it for 67 miles, and then drained my transfer case and installed MOBIL 1 Synthetic ATF.

Do you think I did any damage to my transfer case?

What damage would the Dexron VI cause?

How many remember the great debate that turned into an outright mob riot on a member here that worked for the company that makes these T-cases? I do, the poor guy was lambasted until he didn't post any more! Some high tech guru who posted here was one of them! Because he did advocate the use of 5w30,alot jumped on board blindly and rioted against all who went against the flow.

I applaud Dave for his work again.

David. A most timely report and I thank you. Damned glad I read it. Logical, concise and you put it out there for us the readers to make up our own mind.

We have awesome trucks...why is that..?? What, cause GM builds crap..?? no. Yes there are some issues that are chronic: ISS, Trans lines, pump rub. But in this case nothing to suggest that 5w-30 to 0W-20 is the better/right choice for the TC. I agree that maintenance and how/where you drive your truck may have a lot to do with whatever choice you make.

I am about to do the pump rub fix this Friday the 4th of Dec. I will be filling my TC with Transynd. I trust that fluid in my Ally and seems to me it should work just fine in my TC...particularly in the cold temps we see up here in Northern Ontario.

Thank you.!

Thanks

dnewton3,

Nice post. I recently picked up my first dmax and have been lurking in a few forums trying to decide which one to join. This post pulled me in, thanks.

...OK, So what is this?
Manual Transmission Fluid Gm Part No.. U.S. 88861800

Is it motor oil, Dex III, Dex VI, 5-40, 80-90 or something else?
The dealer dummies up and just wants $14 a quart...
I'd be willing to be it's Lube Loob..!! :D Just like they used to sell in those tall clear bottles way back in the day.

Typical GM hosing its customers that are unable to or unwilling to learn anything about the vehicle they drive and listen intently while someone sticks a 2 X 8 up their A$$.

I had no choice this spring cause I was dumb and didn't buy an extra gallon of Transynd when I had the chance...needed some synth Trans fluid and went to the dealer: $ 45.95 a Quart CAD..!! and it doesnt even say what it is..!! I almost went postal on the guy. ARe you for F***** real..?? Transynd sells for $43.15 a Gallon in Sudbury at an Allison Dealer..but they wanted 45.95...i had no choice, but was majorly pissed. I'm surprised the manual tranny fluid is so cheap.

rgds,

Looks like nobody actually knows the answer to michigancamper's question.
Has anyone found out yet?

Last time I did a transfer case fluid change I used the GM part #88861800. I found my old container with a little left in it and here is what the back of the bottle says it is. I dont know if this is helpful but it's something.

Contains; Automated transmission fluid, Lubricating oils, petroleum, C15-30, hydrotreated neutral oil-based, contg. solvent deasphalted residual oil - CAS #72623-84-8, Lubricating oils, petroleum, C20-50, hydrotreated neutral oil-based - CAS #72623-87-1, Mineral oil, slab oil - CAS#8042-47-5.

Interesting.
Hey lube and oil guys what do the contents of the GM 88861800 suggest to you?
To me it says that the main ingredient is ATF since it is listed first. As for the rest of the mix, I have no idea what that stuff is.

Something I forgot to mention is the back of the container also says to refer to the MSDS for more information. The MSDS will list everything and I am sure that will give you a much better idea of what is in the mystery fluid.

Great write up man. Thanks for the info!

Don't confuse the "MANUAL TRANSMISSION AND TRANSFER CASES" to the "Automatic Transfer cases". Your link talks about "MANUAL" transmissions and transfer cases.
The Manual Transfer case has the shifter in the floor. The Automatic Transfer Cases have the shifter knob on the dash.

I have an 02 push button in dash, the fluid in it is red out of the factory & shows dex lll or vl stampnied or cast in the Tcase it self. (anyone want to see what mine looks like 71'000 mi. 8.5 years original fluid sorry to say).

Nice write up.

I use Transynd in my trucks transfer case, but my 03 Dually came with the Blue Auto-Trak fluid in the transfer case from the factory.

.

I've been using a completely different fluid for a while in the XHD transfer cases in the Diesel trucks and have had suprisingly very good results in the auto-trak cases as well.

Its not a motor oil nor a transmission oil. I dont want to endorse it publicaly just yet as I dont have enough long term data. Its a commercially available fluid, no snake oil. Just making sure it works well before I endorse it as a replacement.

So what is this magic elixer?

I have a New Process 246 in my 98 Suburban that calls for Auto Trak II

Is there something else I can use? Something from Amsoil maybe?

Okay, this is confusing, but here's what I've got, so you can compare it with yours. I have a mid-year '03 2500HD Duramax (LB7) with a 263XHD push button transfer case manufactured 6-17-03 by New Process in Syracuse, NY (info is on plate attached to the TC). I am the original owner of this truck and I am embarrassed to say I drained it for the first time today (120k mi.) and the fluid was BLUE. The case is intact, clean, doesn't leak, and appeared to still be full.

I then called the dealer parts guy (Sir Walter Chevy, Raleigh, NC) and he looked it up by the truck's VIN#. He said this is considered an "automatic" case, not a "manual" nor an "AWD" case and should use Auto-Trak II, which is the blue stuff at $9.63 per quart (2-3 quarts). Dexron III is not the proper fluid for this case. Since I know my case is good (no hole - yet) and has held up for 7 years, that's what I'm putting back in it. It does appear to be somewhat higher viscosity than ATF and has a little more oil-like feel, like maybe a 0-20W oil(?).

My conclusion from this is to put in whatever came out. If it's blue - Auto Trak II, and if it's red, Dexron III. Apparently that's what the dealers do (or are supposed to do). Hope that helps.

Royal Purple said they have a product to substitue for Auto Trak.

Just got back from the dealer. The Auto-Trak II bottle says "Transfer Case Fluid" & "For four wheel drive vehicles with automatic transfer case".

That tells me GM considers the 263XHD an "automatic" TC. They quoted me $9.63 over the phone, but marked it down to $8.76 when I got there. I'm sure there are alternatives out there. Royal Purple apparently, and how about RedLine MTF?

BTW, they also quoted me $59+ for a fuel filter, but when I told them I could get it mail order for about $36, they reduced it to $41.99. I will still patronize our on-line vendors whenever I can, but I needed one today.
