I don't have the 285's but I do have the 255's and I was in the snow earlier this month and in the packed stuff no problem. Deep snow (haha that in Cali is about 12 inches) no problem. Ice, didn't really run into much of that, a few patches on some side streets up in the mountains that were not an issue. They were great in the rain as well. Only con is because they are built so stout, they do weigh more than the average tire in the same size.
Noise, yeah there is a hum, but nothing to worry about especially if you it's your work truck. Mine truck is the vacation mobile and I get no complaints from wife and kids.
Cost, about 10-15% more compared to same size tire, but they typically wear 10-15% longer (what I've read, not experienced as I have only 4000 miles so far). But that's my take.
