Anyone have an idea about the torgue specs for the front wheel adapter to the hub?
The specs in the shop manual state: dual wheels - 175 ft-lbs, single wheels - 140 ft-lbs.
Here's what has me wondering: Does the adapter create forces on the front hub that require it to be treated as if it were a dual wheel setup. Should the adapter and wheel lugs for the front tire be torqued at 175 ft-lbs? Currently, I have the adapter and wheel lugs torqued at 140 ft-lbs. Another thing which constipates me is that the hub is bolted to the steering knuckle with only 4 bolts torqued to 133 ft-lbs. The wheel requires 8 bolts. I don't understand the dynamics of this. Why shouldn't the hub require 8 bolts @ 140 ft-lbs or, said another way, why does the wheel require 8 bolts and not 4. The only logic I can come up with is that the 4 hub bolts are in a smaller circlular pattern than the 8 wheel bolts, and, therefore, can handle the load.
No where (at least I can't find it) in my 5 vol set of GMC Service Manuals for my specific truck is the wheel adapter ever discussed. It's not mentioned in my Haynes manual either which, aparently, doesn't cover duallies, but that's no surprise.
