Could be either a 700R4 or a 4L60E - the same thing but with electronic controls. More than likely the former, particularly if it's the older style cab.

The easiest way to identify automatic transmissions is the pan profile. The picture is a after market 4L80E pan.

By the way GM did NOT make a 4L80. The predecessor to the 4L80E was the 400 Turbo Hydro which they added OD, an electric torque converter lock up, and computer control of shifting. After market suppliers offer a manual shift option ($$$).

For pictures of 700R4, 350 and 400 pans, see:

My understanding of the 4L85E is that it replaced the 4L80E. When this happened I'm not sure. They are supposedly very similar. Too new for me to have much information.

I have a 91 2500 and it came with a 4l80e. There is no throttle valve cable, just the TPS on the injection pump.

My 91 K2500 I had had a 4L80E too.

85E didn't replace 80E. It was my understanding that the 85E was the same tranny with a few components beefed up to get the extra "5". 6.0 trucks are running the 4L80E....well except the new new trucks with the 6L80E.

Just in case you didn't know.

4 = number of forward gears
L = longitudinal tranny (front wheel drive cars are transverse, or sideways, trannys and have a "T")
80 = rating for strength. Can't remeber the exact wording but it has to do with the amount of torque the tranny can handle.
E = electronic control

Yep, there was a 4L85E. There was also a 4L65E, a little heavier version of the 4L60E. I don't think either of them was used in trucks of this era however.

I forgot the 4L80E. In 6.2 diesel applications for a few years it has a standalone computer to run the transmission, like 1991-1994 (maybe later in cutaway vans and other trucks). It's like having a beefy TH400 with OD and electronic controls.

Yep.

> Is There A Way To Tell If Its A 4l80e or a 4l80?? I Didnt Think They Were Put In A 1991.

Pretty certain that 1991 was the first year that the 4L80 was available in the CK series. I know for a fact that this is the case for the Suburbans.

If you have deep pockets, Suncoast makes an amazing Frankentrans out of the late 4L80's with all the later-year upgrades and top-shelf parts. Now where did I put that extra $2k? And how am I going to scare up another $1k for a torque converter?

As far as I know GM did NOT make a 4L80. They made a 3L80/3L80-HD which was an updated THM 400/475 thru 1990.

The 4L80E was first used in the 3/4 ton trucks in 1991 as has already been noted. Aside from the pan shape, it has an ID Plate on the passenger side of the transmission. I also have a '91 Suburban 5.7L with the 4L80E.

The '90 3/4 T Suburban had the 4L60 transmission if I remember correctly.
