Thinking of trading 08' GMC Crew Cab 4x4 dually

I don't really need the dually anymore and it gets old dealing with the city traffic and roads in a dually. I'm thinking about going to an 08' F250 6.4. I know I'll probably be bashed for saying that but I'm wondering if anyone's experienced both trucks and could make a comparison.

Ford has had some problems with the 6.4. In fact they are coming out with a new diesel next year. Ford's solution to engine problems is not to fix the problem, but to create a new engine, which, of course, creates new problems. The 7.3 was getting old, thus the 6.0, it had problems, thus the 6.4, it has problems thus the new one.

Why not get a GM 3/4 ton with the D/A?

I looked at all trucks closely before buying my GMC and though not a perfect truck it kicks the sheat out of the others when you look at every aspect of "ownership" ;)

I had a chat with a construction equipment business owner about his brand new F550 and he was very unhappy with the loss in mileage over the F550 7.3 he traded in on it. His old truck was pretty worn out but the engine ran perfect and even hauling very heavy loads got really decent mileage.

I'm not brand loyal and was very close to buying a Ford Sept. 08. It was a brand new FX4 CC 6.4 w/ a list of 54k and the dealer was letting it go for 20k under msrp. However, I did not like the engine one bit. Felt very low on power and dpf issues aplenty compared to our 6.6. Also it is lumbered with a 5 speed which sucks if you ever travel on the freeway. Finally, max tq of 650lbs is at 2000rpm compared to 660lbs at 1600rpm for the Dmax. Big difference.

Hopefully the new 6.7 PSD is stronger and more reliable as Ford makes a good truck.

If I were you I'd buy either an 09 GMC/Chevy 2500HD or an 09 std bed Dodge Ram 3500 single rear wheels. The 6.7L Cummins is a pleasure so long as they've sorted the dpf issues out that the first batch had.

I think you might be happier with a 2500 Series with a Duramax. Aside from all of the other things mentioned earlier, our friend purchased a 6.4L earlier this year (she is a huge Ford fanatic) to pull her horse trailer and she is currently in the middle of lemon law battle. Let's just say, I've had to haul her horse more with my truck since she took delivery of hers.

Thanks for the replies. I've decided to sit tight for now. Although I've heard some good news on the 6.4 PSD, I've also heard the negatives. I'm not going to risk the chance of getting a truck that gets 10 to 12 mpg! I've been researching the new 6.7 PSD coming out and I'll wait to see how it performs. My 08' GMC dually has been fairly reliable and the engine is amazing. I just really prefer the cab of the super duties.

They are getting rid of the 6.4 because Ford's manufacturing agreement with International is over with, in fact it got pretty ugly because Ford decided it had to make it's own diesel engine and International felt it was a breach of contract etc. So a corporate divorce was in order.

Fords' may get crappy mileage based on the gearing. GM's come with 3.73's and you can get Fords with 4.30's. That will definitely have a negative effect on mileage, over drive trans or not. Lack of 6 spd I am sure hurts a little as well. Does anyone know if they are heavier as well?

whats the deal with these ford engines? My ole man has a 6.0 f 350 the only problem he has had was injectors fixed under warrenty now his truck has 201k miles other than that the truck has been supurb I guess it makes a difference what part of the week the truck was built

The super duties are a significantly bigger truck all the way around, not in capability but just over-all dimentions I see a Big difference if I park my truck next to a F250. So your reason for unloading your truck (maneuverability, or lack there-of and size) for a Ford doesn't make a ton of sence. I realize youd go to a SRW but still, dont think youd gain any ground except for parallel parking.

You should clarify if the problem is the length of the crew cab or the width of the dually. If you just want a SRW regular cab with a 6' or 8' box, then you are talking apples and ... grapes. If you only pull a trailer on occation then a short box 1/2 or 3/4 ton is the way to go since it will do circles inside the turning radius of a CC. The plates and insurance will most likely also be less on a smaller rig plus mileage may be a little better. Personally I would stay with a GM dispite Government Motor problems. I have a need for my dually so I will deal with traffic and park in the far corner of the parking lot...

Why would you throw out the steak and lobster to have hamburgers/hot dogs??;) If you need a smaller truck, get a 2500 duramax.

In my opinion, avoid the 6.4 at all cost. Horror story after horror story. Aunt and Uncle have one and it spends more time at the dealership than at home. The 6.0 started out with some issues, but largely resolved (early variable vane turbo issues (buddy is on he third already with +/-50k, etc.). The 7.3 is a workhorse. Loved my 7.3. Loved the good mileage too. Love my LMM more (except for the mileage part). For me (personal experiences), Ford really dropped the ball when it came to the trans. Mine was replace at only 80k (not abused). My Dad's went at less than 1,000 (older diesel). I can't remember the year, but if I recall correctly, there was a marked improvement in the trans mated to the diesel engines ('04, '05 perhaps??). Just can't remember for sure. How quickly one forgets the Ford minutiae when one puts on a bow tie.
