Rear Wheel and lug alignment

OK guys, I am new to duallys and this is going to probably be a stupid question, but the other day I took off the rear wheels to check condition of tires and air them up to proper PSI. I notice that there is a steel ring on the outside of the outter wheel that lug nuts center into. My question is, how do the wheels center up, or do they not have to, there seems to be a little bit of play around the studs but then maybe I wasn't paying close enough attention. Am just concerned of safety and it does seem I have some balance issues now back there as I feel a bump in the seat that wasn't there before. Also as a note the only thing I did different remounting the wheels was to align both valve stems to the same access hole in my sims, where-as they were on opposite sides. Does this matter?

Thanks in advance for any posts and comments. This place has been a life saver in learning about these great trucks. I am a dually diesel addict now. :muahaha:

I'm not exactly sure what the problem is, but last weekend I rotated my tires. When I get the inner tire on, I then put the outer tire on with its lugs torgued. I then pushed the big center rim in, then the center cap and then put the 2 cap nuts on. My thought is that if you feel a thump, maybe your lugs are not tight. I torqued them to 140 lbs. Maybe you have a different set up from mine. Not sure.

If your goal is to keep up with your tire pressures (which is a good idea), consider getting metal valve stems with a valve extension to the inner tire. That way you don't have to take your tires off to check the pressure. Good luck!

His rig is different from ours in that it is not hubcentric. The Valvestems being in the same place should not be a problem.

Do you have pictures of your setup....the last pre-'02 GM dually I drove was a '91.

Your right, I didn't pay attention to the year model. My bad!

There is a ring on the older trucks. The lug nuts are tapered and sit in to the ring like a normal rim. The rim rides on the hub not the lugs.

Tire places all ways screw up putting on the simulators. Rim simulator ring center cap lugs lug covers. Make sure all holes in the rims ands simulators are lined up so you can check and fill air pressure on inside tires.

I will try to get a picture, but you all have pretty much answered my questions about how the rims center up. I was working on installing the fast idle option today and noticed the rear outter tire on the driver side was low. Looks like the inside wall has a pretty good cut on it that I didn't see last time I had them off. "Sighs" is always something....!! I am thinking the low tire might be the issue with the out of balance feeling. The tires are in great shape with good tread left. I hate to have to buy two just to fix one. Does anyone make a boot or tube to fit the 235/85's or is that even a good idea? Thanks for everyone's input.
