last week my truck started puffin white smoke. i immediatly knew (thought) that it was head gaskets. after tearing everything apart the past couple days found cracks in between valves on both heads in multiple places. So, i ordered new heads (evidentally you can't buy remans) they cost me 800 total. Also i am going to try and replace my O/FTS. is it ok to use a used O/fts jus to c if that is my problem? also replaced fsd and bought cooler. any heads up on anything i am doing would be appreciated.

Cracks in between the valves is common, and in MOST cases doesn't affect them at all. Do a search and you'll see that cracks in between the valves are a common issue. And remans are available all over, CLEARWATER CYLINDER HEAD comes to mind as 1 as well as many others.

Cracks between valves is normal, and most times they will NOT leak coolant, your new heads will do it too edventually, the "little " frost plugs can be removed, the holes reamed out and brass valve guides installed, If cracks develop this will keep them from leaking coolant into the combustion chamber.
BTW what is O/FTS??

Make sure and use good gaskets. Would go with felpro. Also could think about ARP head studs. If nothing else make sure and get new head bolts. Also get some good rtv stuff (don't remember the name) for the valvue covers. Might think of injectors and new glows while you have it torn appart.

other new parts.

unfortunatly i am struggling with this tow company and truck. i purchased this truck 10 months ago w/o a motor. found a used motor (complete) for 2500. I think i got a good deal on truck and motor considering im only into it for about 11k and for the most part it has given me small problems (except heads). while disassembling i pulled a glow plug and it started puking coolant. could this jus possibly be a gasket and not the heads? And i am using fel pro gaskets and my friend has good sealant for valve covers. why new head studs?? ( prob dumb ? )

The head bolts should only be used once (or never) because they stretch and cause problems. The head studs don't stretch and give you a true torque when you put them on. So you have a nice even head on the gasket. I know the studs are expensive but only do it once.

I would be interested in knowing if you were able to locate a source for the optical fuel temp sensor. I've been looking everywhere with little luck!

where i got my O/fts

no, unfortunatly i couldn't get one from the dealer or our ip shop. a friend of mine had one laying round in a pump that was replaced because of warranty issues, so he gave it to me

I don't have anything to add re: the heads but heads up on the FSD cooler. Mount the thing out of the engine bay to avoid any future problems. Especially if you've got a brand new driver with it.

Mabey give the intake a ream job. Also if you are going to put a boost gauage on you might want to install the fitting while you have the intake off. Just acouple of ideas thrown out.

thanks alot i did order new head bolts and gasket kit from fel pro, i do have an fsd cooler on my intake. From what i have been reading thats not good enough so i will mount it on the firewall soon.

mounting on the intake is no different than mounting it on the firewall, you have to get it out of the engine bay
