Hi, I'm new to this forum. I thought it would be a good place to get some info. I Had an aftermarket stereo installed, now my check engine light is on. The dealer wants 90.00 to reset it. Is there a way to do this myself? Thanks in advance!!:help:

It could be as simple as something like removing the instrument cluster and running the motor that caused it.

You can go to a local autozone or another place like that they will read the codes for free and clear them for you.

Don't spend $90 with the stealer. If you're going to spend that much you can buy yourself a code reader.

The dealer should really do that for free in my opinion.

I would get the code checked, like Max said, try a local chain parts store, a lot of them will read codes for free.

Max, you want guys that have to spend 50K plus in tools, to take time out to go read codes for free instead of making money?

Not to take away or say anything bad about getting things done aftermarket, but if it is caused because of aftermarket work or parts, why should the dealer eat that?

Not flaming, just being one of those guys that you think they should give away their time for free :blahblah: :D

Like I dont give enough of my time away for free here....lol....j/k

...you can buy a code reader that will read codes and clear them/turn off the CEL for about 70 bucks, if that...

My dealer would do it for free and you know what? I would actually buy a vehicle from my dealer because of the way they treat me. If a dealer charged me $90 to read and clear a code on my truck I would never set foot in their door again. Think about it, $90!! Maybe not free but $90 is highway robbery.

I do things for free every day. I gain more good customer from a little freebe here and there then you could ever imagine.

Yes, the stock radios now carry a class 2 data circuit through them. If the radio installer cut that wire, then resetting and clearing the code will not keep the light from coming back. The circuit that they cut must be rerouted or reconnected.

I had navigation swapped from my 03 to my 06 today and my engine light is on also. I have a friend who has all the code readers who will read it and see what happened.

You may get lucky and the code will be set in the PCM. In that case your buddys code reader should be able to pull it up and clear it if nessisary. If the code is on the body side of things then it may be a little different. 05 and up trucks us GMLAN high speed communications. On the body side the datastream is no longer done on the class 2 communication line (pin 2 on the ALDL) that is where most "generic" code readers use to communicate. Good luck

You are correct, his code reader just said it was undefined code and safe to drive but couldn't give any info or clear it. Took it to the dealer and they cleared it.
