How long to cool down glow plugs?

I'm about to replace my glow plugs - they're all original from 95. I had to move the truck into the garage, so it was running for about 5 minutes.

How long do I need to let the engine cool before its safe for my fingers to remove the plugs? Its just above freezing in the garage, and just above zero F (-15C for you metric types).

I would think an hour or two would be fine, but I've been caugh off guard working on car thermostats 5-6 hours after parking them only to 2nd degree burns from pressurized coolant away from the temperature sensor.

Thanks - now I just have to hope none of the plugs have mushroomed

Not sure - with the hummer it also involves opening up the inside to get to the rears. Since I'm redoing my interior there isn't much to remove at the moment, just the inside engine cover.

Normally that would add an extra hour or two to the job.

I wouldn't wait at all. As long as the exhaust manfold is not hot go for it.
