Hot 4WD Knob when lights on -4WD Failure -Help!

So, since its an electrical problem, thought I'd post it here. Noticed when my headlights are on (2007.5), my 4wd knob gets warm, one might even describe it as hot. When it gets warm I may or may not get a service 4wd warning light. I can turn the knob, but it won't switch into 4wd when this happens. Lights off, knob cools and switching into 4wd is no problem. Has anyone had this problem before and, more importantly, what was the cure? First thought is to just replace the switch/knob, but I wonder if the switch is causing the problem or it there's a short somewhere. My guess is teh switch isn't acutally the problem. Hoping against hope for an easy fix. Passed 36k on this trip, so no warranty. Thanks!

While I can't really offer actual solutions to your problem, I do know that all the control knobs run warm with the lights on because, unlike the LED-lit instrument cluster and most of the other controls, the 4WD and headlight control knobs still have a conventional lamp inside for night illumination. It's very possible that this heat is causing or exacerbating a problem within the 4WD control knob itself, which does contain some electronics inside.

Thanks Greatbear. I assumed it had leds. Well, then I'm guessing its the knob itself (heat being the enemy of electronics). I'll try and get in there and pull the bulb (don't need it) and see if that cures the problem. Thanks again!

Thanks for the info. Good to know its supposed to get hot. Wish it didn't get so hot to make it so it won't go into 4wd though. Perhaps its GM's way of keeping me from wearing out the front diff too quick?
