Here are some pics...

I used the diagram in this post: http://dieselplace.com/forum/showthread.php?t=194100&highlight=airbox

Some of the dimensions needed to be changed for my particular application. The hole needed to be bigger and the box had to be made longer to accomodate the OEM round filter.

Just have to put on a bottom plate and a removable plexi glass top....oh the fun I have...:D

Looks good. Is it just sheet metal? Are you going to insilate it?

You Canadians and your floresent motor parts. :D That will go great in San Francisco. You guys need your man cards pulled. :D I bet you guys could pick up some guys at the SF auto show w/ those trucks. Just open the hood and they will come.

BTW I am Canadian. I live here in California. I remember back in high school my favorite color was tourqois. It must be a Canadian thing. :D

Now, what would happen if you made the hole in the fender rectangular and make it be the length of your box.

What is the deal with that orange thing with the intake hoses going to it?

#4 ·
I have the same filter setup on mine. What did you use between the factory elbow and the filter? I had to use 3" ABS elbow shaved off a bit on the filter end? Box looks good!

#5 ·
Also do you find the heater hose catchs the hood hinge?

#8 ·
Since when did the 6.5 power the delorian? Doc brown used compost to power the flux capacitor, Chris uses boost :D

Joking aside, it's his WTA IC

Nice job on the intake chris, using an ABS plastic elbow didn't even cross my mind, I what a plexiglas top too, just because it'll help seal out engine bay air, and I can also engrave it at work (S&B Idea)

I like the painted heat shield on the turbo though although I'm more of a black and white colours man.

Can't keep a good 6.5er down, glad to see the deer didn't claim your spirt dude. What's next??? :D

1. Yes it is just some light gauge sheet metal - roughly the same stuff that furnace ducting is made of.

2. Insulation might be an idea in the summertime.

3. It is not fluorescent - it is Chevy Orange - same color my 396 used to be in my 66 Chevelle SS - manly enough for you?

4. I am thinking of routing the cold air a little differently up to the airbox.

5. jifaire already answered the 'orange box' question.

6. I used a 3" ABS elbow as well.

7. I don't know what hose you are talking about as far as catching the hinge. The one that runs to the top of the recovery tank?

8. Next on the list is the exhaust system...don't want to put the HO injectors in until the engine can breathe a little easier - it is feeling slightly asthmatic right now...

I must have been misunderstood.
I have nothing against Chevy orange, I'm a proud chevy owner, the chevelle is one of my fav cars and I happin to like the colour, on HIS truck.
On my own, I have a black and white thing going on.
It's an old ugly work truck, I don't want the under hood to look aftermarket, especially now, they have an anti street race thing going on, and all I need is a cop to want to check out my truck cause it sounds like it's "hopped up" or if they do a random saftey check, if it's painted black, and you make the set up clean, you can pull off a stock look. I don't race, and I never go over 130kph when keeping up with traffic in the fast lane, my truck isn't built to race. My fun is off the road.
I don't need my truck impounded and my license suspended.

That's all, if I offended someone, I'm sorry.

#7....yes

#12 ·
ABS elbow found at Home Depot, Lowes, etc. Look in the plumbing section.

The turbo whistle is louder than it was in the 94 (and I am still on the stock exhaust with this truck).

#13 ·
It is an indisputable fact that the only acceptable color of paint under the hood is Chevy orange. If it's already black from the factory, or bare metal or plastic, that's one thing, but you can't paint anything other than orange.

Although personally I would only paint an engine block with Chevy orange.

Is that box fabricated from sheet stock, or was it a box you found that was the right size?

#14 ·
Made it in the basement....LOL....I put a bottom plate on it today to keep heat from rising up from underneath...

#15 ·
Thanks for the clarification on the chevy orange flux capacitor. Now that I know that is Chevy orange what is that florescent green that is on Canadian Riggers rig? GMC Green :D

Okay here is a serious question. What is the intake temperature and air flow difference between the stock box and what has been fabricated w/ the sheet metal?

Does your new box have a floor in it. The pics don't show.

#16 · (Edited)
Box has a floor in it.

The reason I went to the 97 style intake is the higher flow of the bigger filter and to get away from the flat panel K+N POS that was in the truck when I bought it. They have problems sealing to the stock filter box.

Lots of posted facts about the upgrade on this site....gotta use the 'search' function to yield results....

Black ABS pipe is not as common in the USA from my experience. PVC is used. PVC is the white colored one. 3" PVC will work fine as well.

#25 ·
Oops, sorry, I just realized you aren't in America. My bad. Can they really look under your hood and impound your vehicle for modifying it? I know California has started getting some pretty ridiculous laws passed because of all the street racers killing people. Unfortunate situation because it puts a bigger gap between the kids and the police, and it takes away constitutional rights from the rest of us.
For instance, there is a downtown street in a nearby city where cruising has always been some sort of a problem. So the police will stop anyone they suspect is cruising, even if they are not racing, not speeding or running stop signs, or blasting loud music, just because the older people don't want the activity around. They think it attracts crime. So, I say, address the crimes, not the cruisers. If I hopped into somebodys gay little Civic and drove up and down a legal road in AMERICA, I'm going to get stopped by the Police?? WTF? I thought I had to be doing something wrong to get pulled over. Man I hate when my rights get trampled. Kind of like when Wal Mart greeters think they can stop and detain me to check my packages. If you have no reason to suspect I'm stealing, then you cannot treat me as a thief!

#30 ·
Probable cause is all that they need. If your muffler is too loud that is all they need. If they see you close your glove box when walking up to the car, etc. It doesn't take much. They can say they smell marajuana or alcohol and that gives them probable cause. I'm in California and I remember when you had to have a moving infraction before they could cite you for a seat belt infraction. Now they can pull you over for not wearing one. California is getting more socialist but luckily my taxes are still less than my family in canada.

Whew! Sorry about the rant, and sorry Chris for totally hijacking your airbox thread. Touched a nerve, is all.

ROFL.. methinks there is sombody here that has been wrestled to the ground and cavity-searched by a couple 80-yr-old Walmart greeters... Those old folks are nasty that way
hee hee hee. Actually I just walk by them and ignore them, waiting for one to try and stop me or lay a hand on me. My wife stops and gets mad that they are holding her up, I told her she doesn't have to stop for them. Other day she stops and my 2 yr old got away and started running outside to the parking lot. My wife goes to chase him while trying not to lose the 4 yr old, and the greeter woman is yelling at her that she has to stop. Like she's going to let the kid run free in the parking lot amongst all the cars while she checks her receipt and her bags. Bull.
Last week my mother-in-law bought a bunch of stuff, somehow the cashier failed to ring up a 12 pack she was buying for her husband. When she gets to the greeter and the greeter catches the mistake, she is detained and made to feel like a criminal. No suggestion that it could have been a simple mistake, and not even her mistake, but they treated her like s$^t in public in front of a bunch of people. After they figured it out and she paid for the beer, not a word of apology or accepting that it was their fault. So now my family does not shop at WalMart.
I went online and read anti-Walmart stuff for an hour or so. Did you know that after they build, they arbitrarily challenge their tax assessments to try to save money, regardless of whether they may be getting overcharged or not. Just take a shotgun approach to it, so that some towns will certainly cave in and lower their tax bill. WalMart puts millions more in their pockets by always doing this. Even when they are already getting a tax abatement in exchange for the privelege of having them come to town. My town gave them a multi year huge tax abatement to "attract them" here, although they wanted to come and they would have built even if the town wanted to stop them, they are hard to stop. The promise of good jobs and lower taxes is BS. My taxes are up another thousand bucks since they got here, yet they arent paying. And the jobs are low paying, no health insurance and anti union.
They actually monitor each store for union talk, and when necessary they send a team to the store to take over and root out and dismiss the troublemakers.
WalMart is the most un-American business I have ever seen.

Back to the air box... Am I missing something or are some airboxes more restrictive than others? The one on my truck looks pretty good. It has a big ol' hole about 3" in diameter or so that gets cool air from the fenderwell. There's a big round cannister air filter and it's all enclosed in a black box that's easy to get in and out of.

So, I hafta wonder why I need one. :D

I noticed on my 99 burb that the intake temps are basically the same as the coolant temp when the truck is at operating temps. That is w/ the stock air box. Since that is the case I took my box off all together. Since the air temp is the same as the engine temp more hot air is better than less hot air w/ the box on. That is why a lot of guys on here change their intakes. With a custom air box like chris has built w/ some insulation will give you cooler air and if the box is larger than the stock it will give you more air. The next mod needed is an intercooler. That will truely cut down the intake temps by at least 50 degrees in the summer time.

I hear what you're sayin, White, but they can't impound your vehicle unless it has illegal equipment, and there's damn little illegal about intercoolers, headers, etc. Like I said, you can have all kinds of stuff on your vehicle, and as long as it is safe, ain't too loud, and ain't goin' too fast, there isn't a damn thing they can do.

FWIW, if they pull street racers outta their ricers and use a tazer on 'em until their eyes bug out, it's all fine by me. I think they should just crush the cars on the spot when they catch 'em street racing... I know lots of guys who would volunteer their trucks and their time to do that job!!!

But there's little chance of anybody mistaking a 6.5 Turbo Diesel 3/4 ton for a street-racing machine... LOL.

i need to weigh in on this as i live in naziontario, the knee jerk reaction to some street racin rice rockets has handed the cops way too much power,. I always thought you were innocent until proven guilty,. well not here in Ontario,. i also thought that our great canadian constitution guaranteed me a right to a fair trial to determine my innocence or guilt,.
no longer in ontario,. What SO many people do not realise with the new sweeping laws that are in place here now (to deter street racing) that the cops can impound your car, and suspend your drivers license for what a cop can now state, you were "STUNTING" couple of cases,. single vehicle speeding+50k,. no one else around 'cept cop and speeder, vehicle gone, license suspended, for 7 days,.. vehicle spinning donuts in the snow covered empty parking lot of a supermarket,.. "stunting".. vehicle impounded, license suspended for 7 days,. if you take off from a stop sign and rev the motor thru the gears uneccassarily you can be charged with 'stunting',. same penalties as already stated,.turn right at a red light in the summer and stand on it a bit too hard,. squeal the tires,. ..'stunting' same penalties as above,..
Here's the kicker about the fascist government here,. you do not go to trial,. you can not appeal,. there is no right to appeal,. minumum fines start at $2000.00 up to a maximum of $10,000.00. you have no right to appeal the fine either,.you are guilty based on the word of a cop.
Now imagine this,. you and the cop have a few words over some minor traffic offense which you happen to take umbridge with,.cop simply calls the tow truck and revises the charge to read "stunting" you know the penalty for that,. Of course radar guns, and cops never make mistakes (or tell lies ) right? you happen to running 48kph over the limit,. but the cop doesn't like your attitude,. (i mean after all i am the lone vehicle at 4am on a deserted road here occifer) so he simply writes 51kph, .... get the idea?
Ever get a ticket and they don't show you the radar reading?? here in ontario they don't have to,..
SO,.. welcome to nazi ontario where your rights and liberties are being suspended , all in the name of making the roads a safer place,.
i didn't even get in to how they can confiscate your car if it has nitrous oxide on it,. or if it has been modified for racing (bigger brakes,. lowered, bigger tires, hi-performance engine etc, (doesn't just apply to ricers ,..)
Great platform for big brother, "safety" at all costs,. we know whats best for the general public,. so we will dictate what will be done,. and save a bunch of time and money and just completly cut out the judicial system,. because that will improve road safety,.if you argue with us then you are against safety.
They caught over 1000 vehicles in the first month,.people from all walks of life and age brackets, and vehicles (211 mini vans) where were the cops before this?? @ million dollars in one month,. pretty profitable eh? making the roads safer,.

i should'a been cop.

ROFL... and in the last election, you guys were calling the WEST "scary, neo-con law-and-order-********"?

I happen to know a few guys in Ontario associated with Emergency Response.. the stories they tell about scraping up bodies of Moms/kids in minivans that got T-boned by rich kids driving Ricers (who incidentally got off, 'cause their Dads were connected) are appalling. I tend to believe that there should be some checks and balances on the Cops, but on the other hand, I tend to believe that most Cops are honest, too. I feel for those who get wrongly fined, but is that not the price we all pay for the 'rights' of the arseholes who are doing this?

Until we Canadians finally get it through our heads that the victims of crime have more rights than the perpetrators, equal treatment is a cross we gotta bear.

Can't have it both ways.

It's sort of like making draconian anti-gun laws because the street punks shoot at each other... the farmers out here get treated like criminals because they have a coyote gun in their farmhouse. Why not just shoot the gang punks when they get caught with a gun? Why not make any crime committed with a gun a minimum of 10 yrs w/o parole?

Not a lot of sympathy here, sorry. Like I said, I think they should catch the street racers and just instantly crush their cars. Deliver the cube to Daddy and let HIM pay to have is recycled. Problem solved.

But, on the other hand, don't you love being "despised" as a "scary, neo-con law-and-order-********"

Back on Topic,
Chris, "cool" airbox. I have to take the time and make one for my truck.

Wow love this post. Chris, is that intercooler of a syclone/typhoon? I have a 93 typhoon and it looks like it. Was wondering if a intercooler from a 4.3 gasser would flow enough CFMs. I think a 6.5 needed between 650 to 700. Just a thought. Do you think most cops would know whats factory or not? We had emissions inspections in Florida several years ago.Gone now thank you very much. It would make me scream when the guy would look for the Cat on my 911 under the floor pan! Cat was in the trash, but it would pass every year. 1200 degrees on an air cooler engine! No way.
