ok i have an 2006 GMC 2500HD LBZ

The thing is so hard to steer.. almost feels like it has no power steering.. but it does. just feels like the pump is not pumping enough fluid to make it easy to steer. I thought it was just mine.. but i talk to a buddie of mine hu has an 06 Chevy 2500 ans he says his is the same way.. i don't get it. Do they all act like this? I mean it is really hard to back a trailer whith the steering like this. I'm taking it to the dealer tommorow to get it looked at.

Anyone else's truck hard to steer like this??

He says LBZ so yes he has a Duramax.

I have a hard time turning the wheel if im not moving but I also have a 13.5" wide tire.

have that same prob when goin slow 12.5 width on the ground. wtf??

Mine was a little tough to steer at slow speeds with 33x12.5 tires, then I changed the power steering fluid and it helped quite a bit. How many miles on your truck?

it has 52,500 miles so far.

I took it to a dealer today to get the truck looked over and the guy there said that they have had alot of other people complaining about the same thing... he also said that the problem has been reported to GM, but they have yet to respond on a fix for it. So now i'm glad im not the only one.

Try starting the engine :)

X2 I switch to Red line syn. PS fluid and it "seemed" to of helped some

Check air pressure, had same problem and added air problem almost gone and mine is a late 2005.

Well good guess but dont think so. been running 50lbs for awhile now

Wasn't there an issue in the past with the brake master cylinders going bad and causing random issues with the power steering? Might be something to look at.

I had completely forgot about that, it definitely was a problem with the brake system and steering ...x2

Mine sucks at slow speed too, so did my 06 and 04 dmax...

Mine is hard to Steer also at Low Speeds. And it's NOT just because of the Bigger Tire & Wheel Combo. I had the same setup on my Avalanche, 24's with 305/35/24 and no matter what Speed I was going, the Wheel was easy to Turn.

Not an apples to apples comparison they don't share any parts that matter in this case and our trucks are just a little heavier to start with.

While I'm still on 245's I can definately see that going up in size would make it have a pretty heavy feel. Right now I like the solid feeling, not too light. Could it be possible that GM just made the steering have a nice solid feel to it and not think about the implications of putting larger rolling stock underneath?

I finally had enough of the weak steering. Installed a rock ram system with PSC pump and a ported Vanco hydroboost. Now it steers like grandma's caddy in 4lo backing a gooseneck.

You signature says you have a winch bumper and 285s. Those two together are causing you hard steering. I didn't really notice too much of a difference when I put on 315s but when I put on my trailready bumper and winch I can't steer while not moving beacause of the extra weight. My bumper and winch combo is 310lbs.

Has anyone ever tryied going to a smaller diameter pully off of the P/S pump.
This would make the pump turn faster.
Also I thought I read sometime back that someone (Like GM) was tring a diffrent size spring in the P/S pump.

I would love to get this problem fixed.

I don't think that the smaller pulley would be a good idea. You could mod the pump for more pressure but unless you have your hydraboost ported to match it may or may not last with the extra pressure. I just put on some new BFG KM2's and now i can steer a lot easier turning in a parking lot. I guess its the different tread design over the old BFG Km.

I have never rebuilt a pump before, is there not a check-valve or pressure bypass valve in the pump?

When you raise the idle a little (i.e. pump turning faster) the hard steering is now gone, I dont think it is going to build too much pressure, but what do I know, I am just a salesman who knows a little about alot of things, just not a whole lot about a few.

Here I thought I was the only one with this problem. I was going to try and replace the steering dampener on my truck and see if that helps. I do hear a little bit of squeek/whine when I turn my wheels now though. My truck came with 285's on it, and I put new rims/tires with 285's on it. Seems the same still. It kinds sucks trying to park this thing sometimes.

Had my PS pump start having problems at about 95K. While talking to Service Dept Mgr while he was driving to diagnose the problem, he said it was an issue. GM does not put big enough pumps to handle steering at low RPMs.
Ok, so is the pump on a kodiak truck bigger? Does the kodiak use hydra boost system. a kodiak certainly has bigger tire, more weight.

Any GM mechanics out there to chime in?
