Grille Guard vs Air Bag

I recently put a large Frontier grille guard on my truck. It bolts to the frame and also has a bolt on each side that goes through the bumper.
My son asked me the other day if doing that defeated the air bag function. I hadn't even thought of that.
Does anyone know if the air bag system will work the same with the grille guard in place or will it not work at all?
It looks like this:

The airbag will work fine.

Sorry but any of those aftermarket bars are pretty cheaply made, it will fold right up just like the front of the truck will if it gets hit and will trigger the deployment loop just as before.. Looks good by the way, havent seen a brush gaurd like that yet.

Modern airbags are deployed based on decelleration rather than impact or bumper compression.

The downside is that you can deploy when offroading even without bumper impact if, say your front tires hit an obstacle and you come to an abrupt stop.

The upside is that when cops are chasing "the bad guys", their bags won't deploy if the perp taps his brakes and causes the cop to bump him.

Well there is more then one "sensor' that has to trip before anything happens, one may be a deceleration sensor mounted in the cab somewhere but i'd be willing to bet there is something else in the system rather then just relying on one, sort of a failsafe.. I mean you can smash the front of a car and trip an impact sensor to close part of the deployment loop but there still has to be another input before that bag goes, the manufacturers have enough problems as it is.

The HD SIR systems have a much higher deployment threshold than the light duty systems. This is to deal with heavy duty stresses such as plowing etc... which is why HD's didnt even have airbags until 2001. They still arent required by law to have airbags because they are over 8600 GVWR, but people expect airbags in these trucks so GM makes them standard anyway. Thats also why HD's dont have side airbags or the passenger sensing systems or dual stage airbags like the light duty trucks/SUV's. The SIR SDM (airbag computer) works in strange ways and soemtimes you see accidents and dont think how the airbags could ahve not deployed. Its all about rate of deceleration, not "how much the front gets mashed in". If the airbags did not deploy in a collision, 9 times out of 10, its because the SDM made a decision that it was best in the current situation and instance to NOT deploy the airbags. You dont neccessarilly want the airbags to deploy in all crashes. Sometimes airbags can do more harm than good. This is why the SDM has to be selective and monitor many difffernt parameters to determine whether a crash is at the correct angle and severity to warrent an airbag deployment...

But to answer your question, no the grill guard wont mess with the airbags. :)

The front airbag sensor is mounted on the front framerail, as well as acellerometers placed in other areas I think...Nassdmax may correct me if im wrong there tho.

I think yours will still go off since it is not a full replacement. If it was a full replacement then it probably won't. When we went off the overpass and hit the cement on the other side mine didn't go off. I would rather have my full replacement protecting me than have the air big go off.
