Governor adjustment

Long story, but I lost the idle spring on the governor shaft assembly Found a replacement and installed it last night. There is still quite a bit of play / gap between the idle spring and the governor plate. What is the spec?

Welcome to DieselPlace..... long story/short version. If you did not at least count the number of turns to be able to get it close when re-assembling, you will be doing it by trial and error. The actual number of different DB2 calibrations and differing builds (springs, internal parts , etc...), is staggering.....LOL. Go into the FAQ's, and first off look up your pump configuration (DB28XX-XXXX), then find a comparable military set-up from the same Stanadyne pump list. Now go in to the military rebuild manual and find the info on the rebuilding of the DB2 injection pumps. You will find the specs there needed to set up your pump again, easier on a test stand though, unless of course the same spring was installed and the number of turns was counted when dis-assembling.....good luck, keep us posted on your progress. BTW, be sure to have a means to cut the air supply off, if you end up with an injection pump runaway situation.....J&J.

I've got runaway shutdown process to a science now.

When you say number of turns....turns on what? On the cap between the governor spring and the idle spring? There were never any turns. It was simply removing the shaft assembly to adjust fuel delivery for a turbo install.

Thanks!

The fuel should be turned up through the side cover (pin on timing gear @10:00).

In order to remove the governor rod assembly (newer DB2's), it needs to be threaded out. Older style, there is no adjustment here (adjustment is intermediate shaft), but hard to loose a spring from the older style DB2's. There is slack, when assembly is at rest. It needs rotational movement (centrifugal governor) to bring the cage assembly into contact with the spring. The adjustments are then made to have a stable idle and a maximum rpm.....J&J.

Thanks! FWIW, the pump is a 2829-4701. The replacement spring I received was a blue spring. No idea what color was on the original. When I hooked throttle / vacuum module up, I did notice it drew some slack out of the governor shaft. I guess I'll get a helper and snuff it out immediately if it appears to be another runaway.
