hi, i have a 1987 ford f150 2wd, as of right now it has a 300 inline six and a 4 speed stick trans. i like the truck but just not that much, i would really love keeping it if it didnt have a ford drivetrain in it lol. so one day i got the idea to put a 6.2 diesel and chevy trans in it. if you have any thoughts you wanna share please do i need to know things like how much it would cost to put a used 6.2 in it, would i need to built a tranny crossmember or would the bolts on the chevy trans bolt up? what thickness of metal would i have to built the motormounds out of? wireing for motor and extra battery and gauges? glow plug system? if my frame would hold up to the extra weight? i really wanna do this and i would love for this to acually happen and it would def be one of a kind so please tell me what ya think, thanks!:D

Wouldn't a 6.9 or 7.3 ford diesel be simpler?

Most of the old school ford guys rave about that straight 6 being a reliable engine...i couldnt tell you i never owned one

i mean you could probly find a complete running 6.2 truck in decent shape for $1500

Keep the 300, My first truck was a 81 f150, 300ci I6 4x4 with the 4 speed np 435. Ran it untill I got married sold it a 325k+- miles and it was still running strong. U would be $$ ahead to sell it and get a diesel equiped rig, the swap can be done but it will not be easy or cheep, and with diesel going for .25-.50 cents more a gallon than gas u will be money ahead in that department as well. The 300 prob has more hp and tourq than the 6.2 anyways.

I'll probably get bashed for this but here goes....

If your dead set on a diesel swap, I would put a cummins 4bt in it(or 6bt if your of a mind) As much as I love my 6.2L I don't think the ford is worth it. haha
Or keep the 300. I actually liked that engine haha. I had one(I traded it for my 6.2L actually lol)

I, for one, am appaled by this!

4BT is good, but a tall and heavy engine. I propose a 4-53T!

thanks for all the edvice guys, ya im pretty stck on the idea and ya the inline six does have more power but the fuel milage is super bad and i heard the 6.2s are pretty good wth that. i was considering a 4bt cummins but they are def pricy i cant find one for less than 2k and even some of those have problems. if i had the money i would def do that though, they dont weigh much and they have good power, tons of parts so i can beef it up and fordcummins makes a complete bolt on kit for it, just the money thing is the issue!

To get real good fuel economy out of the 6.2L you will likely needed a gear swap to something numericly lower, like 3.08s.
Chances are your truck's gears aren't any where near low 3.xx range.

And arn't BT4s a little hard to find?

He said he was concerned with weight, a cummins wont help in that department. The 6bta is close to 1100 lbs, dont know about the 4bt thou I think the 6.9 might be a little heavyer.

I loath fords, but the yard truck has a 300 in it and has close to 400xxx with no issues. I agree with these guys, if you want a diesel id buy a truck with one.

If your dead set on a swap, international would be easiest.
were at in mich?

Fab some motor and trans mounts. Install a stand alone trans controller. Fabricating up the GM cluster to fit the ford dash will be some work.
Try fitting an F250 diesel tank into an F150:unsure: and have a working fuel gauge
