Fake Cat's

I'm thinking of getting a new exhaust soon but I don't think I'd like the hassle of dealing with swapping cats everytime I want to take truck to dealer. I was thinking that when I get my new exaust, I'm going to split the cat in half, gut it out, then weld it OVER or AROUND the new Exhuast. That way it looks like theres a Cat there, but inside is just a straight pipe.

Anyone do this?

I've talked to people that claim they have - I'd weld it to the exhaust pipe so you don't have to listen to it rattling (like the cat rattling around on the pipe wouldn't be a dead giveaway or anything)

I know someone that enlarged the inlet and outlet holes and JB welded it to their new exhaust. I think there was a set screw on the top side to keep it fixed in place. The JB looked just like welds and as far as I know is still in place years after installation.

I would enlarge the inlets and outlets to fit the 4" MBRP exhaust and then find some way to weld it or stick it. It would just suck if I ever decide to sell the MBRP exhaust with a fake cat welded to it etc.

It depends on the dealer, my dealer didn't say a word about my missing CAT. It's been in multiple times, once to replace the engine. It only takes about 15 minutes to change out the entire front pipe and besides, what happens if you butcher your CAT and your state decides to begin emission testing diesels?

You don't say.....;)

Eventually, the JB Weld flaked off. (NE Ohio, lots of salty winters...)

But, it turns out I never really needed it. In Ohio, my experience has been that the chance of them rolling the mirror under the truck to look is less than 50%. In addition, if I had just left the seam open, they wouldn't have noticed. Plus, the cat makes ABSOLUTELY NO DIFFERENCE on how I blow on my "E-Check" (strangely, I get 0% opacity every time. Equipment problem? I dunno, but it's not my problem...:))

With the Dmax, I am not going this route. For the 6.5 there really wasn't a choice. Considering you can swap the cat pipe back and forth pretty easily on a 6.6, I am keeping my cat whole and just swapping it in when I go "on road" or for an e-check

That said, if MBRP or another vendor made a cat delet pipe that included some sort of can that looked anything like it might be a cat, I would buy it and take my chances "on the road" and at e-check time....

Regardless, JB WELD RULES for all sorts of things.....:muahaha:

I dont think Texas will do that anytime soon. But you're right. I guess first I should see how hard it actually is to switch out the front pipe.
If you look at our CAT's the inlet and the outlet are not straight through. I am not sure if you can just enlarge the holes and put a straight pipe through it without some major modfications. Get the CAT delete pipe and switch it out, or get the high flow Magnaflow Universal 4" unit welded into it and be done.

Is that an aftermarket highflow CAT??

on my 94 chevy Z71 i had the cats gutted out and welded back on so that the cops that stoped to see if i have a exhaust on it couldn't tell and weren't brave enough to embound my truck to have the exhaust checked so yes its possible but i wouldn't worry about it just delete the kitty if the dealership says somethng just go put it on and then go back or go to a different one most likely they won't remember you anyways
