Does anybody know if I can buy a new duramax crate engine? I have a 2005 LLY Chevy 1 ton 4x4 with 459,000 miles and a blown duramax (injector went bad I think and screwed up cylinder wall and piston like hardcore). I am just wondering if anyone knows anything about acquiring a new one. Would it be impossible to find a new LLY crate motor, a LB7 or an LBZ ? Could I go to the duramax factory and buy a LMM motor off the line and put it in the truck? I am not sure where to go from here.. Anybody done anything like this? I talked to a GM dealership and they said it will cost anywhere from $15k - 17k and up. I asked if that was a joke, and they said no. The engine was like a $6K option when I bought the thing.. $15K plus for another engine sounds like a joke to me.

If your stock and plan on staying that way, you could easily find another one with low miles and continue on your high mileage journey.

I would say go with Ben's advice on another used engine if you want to keep running that truck, just be cognizant of what you buy.

I would look local first so you can avoid shipping charges and have one throat to choke if you have a problem. Are you looking to install it yourself?

Yeah I have had really good luck staying with stock engines. I found several on ebay that im pondering on right now.

Yeah im definitely going to try to do it myself. I have the old engine pulled out right now and have it laying in my shop. That little project took a couple beers! The wiring is what really creates a headache...

Thanks to everyone on here for the advice.

there are plenty of dmax's with 450k+ miles.

Shoot, I also want to know if that 459k was from an original motor... that's awesome!
If it is, I'd write GM and see if they could 'comp' you something for being in their longevity commercials... lol

We have a small stock of rebuilt engines for stock replacment on hand. All of the durability upgrades have been incorpotated as well.
Nice, I may be interested in one... Thanks for the reply. Im thinking that this whole project might cost more than the truck is worth. Im debating wether or not to just go buy another truck, with all the rebates they have going right now.

I found a brand new LMM duramax with allison/transfer case and everything else on ebay. Which would be tight because I would have a new motor as well as that newer 6speed allison. Now, if it says it comes with the ecm, does that mean all I would need to do is pop it in the truck and im good to go? I read on here about EFI live.. would that enable me to run a straight pipe behind this motor and not have any "check engine" crap? Im sure im oversimplifying things dramatically, but how far off course am I?

LMM will not work in your truck.

You could buy a new or rebuilt short block and just install the tin and other components from your stock motor onto it.

Ive seen them advertized some where search the web and anything a STEALER quotes you is usely double what they pay for part so 6k x 2 plus whatever else they can get away with is = about 15-16 K search and find

I would buy a used engine off ebay or something...you can get them for 3500-4000 dollars.
