Why does the 6.5TD not engine brake? This is my first diesel so I don't know an better but when I lay off the go pedal the RPM's drop down to idle.

Why the difference?

I am not sure how diesel engine should be brake-d but I don't think in this 6.5 is different than any other gasser. Nothing special, in my 95, it uses brake pad in front and drum in the back. It has a hydroboost system and not vacuum like my Camry.

Down shift to a lower gear, it'll compression brake the truck better then the service brakes do (unless you stand on them.)

As for engine braking with a big load or trailer, look up an exhaust brake.

exhaust break, or a heath chip they keep the TC engaged till you touch the breaks

If you put a manual switch on the torque converter clutch you can switch that on and it definitely gives some braking power because it locks your motor to your transmission. Not sure if it is recommended for heavy loads though might wear out the clutch eventually.

You have to have an OBD1 to do the TCC lock up mod, or get the BD torqloc for the OBD2

I kinda enjoy the idle rpm's, the mpg on the 6.5 and is a daily runner delivery unit gets over 20 mpg. The dirtymax is around 16 and it is more hwy than in town. The 6.5 will actually increase speed going down hill.
Never really understood the engine brake thing. Why put a load on the internals and their costly replacement as opposed to replacing brakes, being simple and inexpensive parts to replace. .02 worth

its a more effective way to slow down a vehical than brakes, brakes heat up and fail as with this its always there

Whenever i get off the highway i'll coast down to ~55 mph then drop the truck into 2nd gear. From there she'll engine brake down to about 25 mph or so. Combine this with the service brakes and the truck stops like a dream. :D

i just down shift till she is almost stoped then the light changes
