Anyone brave enough to take the airbag off their truck and find out what the correct part number for the clockspring (SIR COIL) with the heated steering wheel option really is. I'm having trouble locating the correct part as it appears GM has it listed wrong in the catalog. I want to get this figured out so I'll give a $50 gift card (your choice) to the first person that can give the correct part number and send me a picture of setup under the airbag. You should be able to see the part number without having to remove anything but the airbag. Check out the youtube video on how to do it...really easy.

seriously guys we do need some help on this. He is out quite a bit of money so far and still no heated steering wheel. On top of his gift card i will offer a 5% discount on anything you buy to the first person to post up some help. One thing other than the coil part number is the actuall placement of the connector from the steering wheel module. Does it go to get coil or elsewhere? im sure it does go to they coil, but things just dont make since on me and Matts end. HELP PLEASE!!!!

I'm in the same boat and your idea will not work. My dealer has literally taken the steering wheel apart on a different truck in their lot then ordered that part, when it came in it still wouldn't fit my truck. We're now thinking it has something to do with the two stage airbag. My 1 ton does not have a 2 stage, but 3/4 tons and Yukons do. He's thinking that is what's causing the difference.

Update:

I had a member from with this site who has a 2011 Denali 3500HD DRW with heated steering give me his VIN #. My dealer used that Vin # and ordered the clock spring for that truck. BUT, the part is on back order. Once it comes in they will compare it to the others that they have ordered for my truck in the past and see if it is different.

I'll keep everyone updated.

I have had mine apart too and the 2500 3/4 ton has a single stage airbag. That is one of the things that I would like to know...did they use a dual stage air bag on the 2500 Denali? The single stage airbags have one wire and the dual stage have two. The youtube video is a two stage airbag off of a 1/2 ton model.

The 2500 Denali they pulled apart did have a dual stage airbag. They originally thought this is the reason why it wouldn't work and speculated that all Heated Steering wheels have 2 stage airbags.

a bit confused

matgyver,

Now I am confused, am I reading this post correctly? It appears this Denali 2500 had a dual stage airbag. I am still assuming one also needs the control which would be on the left side of the steering wheel with the cruise control on/off control. Is there anything else needed? Keep us posted on your progress.
Thanks!

I was thinking that might be the case. The Yukon Denali uses the GM 25966964 SIR Coil and it is for a two stage airbag setup and heated steering wheel. My guess is that would be the part used on the 2500 Denali. If you ordered the GM 25966966 coil which is what the catalog is calling for on the Denali with a heated wheel it will not work. There is no place on that coil to plug the heater power supply into. It looks like conversion to a dual stage airbag setup might be the only way to install the heated wheel...probably too cost prohibitive since both the driver and passenger airbag would have to be replaced and the SDM module is probably different.

My offer is still out there for the correct part and picture. Looks like there might be the possibility of using a single stage airbag with a dual stage clockspring if the air bag connectors are same. The wiring diagram for the 2010 has the single stage airbag using the same wires as the first stage on the dual stage airbag so it might still be possible.

Is the heated steering not working for some Denali owners?

Denali 2500

Ok gentlemen, I have a 2011 Denali 2500 without the heated steering wheel. Based on what I have read here I should have the two stage airbag, does that mean all I have to do is add the clockspring and I assume the control? Any help would be appreciated.

Why would the steering wheel need a dual stage airbag - no kids in baby seats should be seated in the driver's seat anyway. If the truck is hit and the airbag is triggered it's going to blow the driver side seat, head impact, and steering wheel air bags whether or not someone is in the seat. If no one is in the driver's seat and the airbags are deployed, you've got bigger problems.

GMC Denali HD --if you didn't order the option I think you have the same airbag setup I do...single stage and Pwdr Extreme already verified that his Denali has the single stage airbag. So I think you would be in the same boat as me. So far not a easy swap...

SS Crew -- They stuck the dual stage bag in the 1/2 ton vehicles, probably because of smaller people/kids. Given that most people that drive the HD trucks are men...no need for a dual stage bag. Cheaper to use current parts then to redesign something new for the Denali HD

Yes, it appears GM used a dual stage airbag system on the Denali with the heated steering wheel option. Single stage on truck without the heated steering wheel option. My guess is they used the exact same setup on the Yukon Denali. When you buy a heated steering wheel (20779500) all the switches and sliver trim pieces come with it.

Ok, update on the progress...this can be done with some effort. Here's what you have to do to make this work... purchase a SIR coil from a Yukon Denali (25966964). This is a dual stage air bag coil with heat option. Unfortunately, the ends that go to the airbag are different than the single stage bag so you can't just hook it up. You'll have to swap the airbag connector off the old coil (25966966) on the first set of wire on the new coil. The airbag connector comes apart really easy so no real effort need to swap connectors. The second set of wires will not be used anymore. They are not active and you could cut them off if you want but I just tucked them into the empty space in the wheel. Now you have to take the truck apart in put the new coil in. I swapped mine out tonight and it took alittle over a hour to do it. Some bad news...I didn't find anyplace to plug the heater harness in post SIR coil so it looks like i'm going to have to splice into accessory power. I also found out the actual truck harness that connects to the airbag does not support dual stage airbags. So, there is no way to convert a single stage airbag system to a dual stage system without replacing a major wiring harness etc. if someone was thinking about doing that.

Mat, that is fantastic news! If you don't mind, pm me your phone number, I wanna get all the details on this one. :)

Still a few bugs to work out on mine. I don't think the burns to my hands are as serious as I first thought and I'm able to type with a pencil. But my nose sure feels like it's broken, WOW that airbag sure packs a punch! Does any know where I can get a deal on a pair of nomex gloves and do you think my insurance will pay for a new air bag?
LOL I'm kidding and just being a smart a$$.
Seriously though did they offer the heated wheel on a Silverado 3500? I might be interested in doing this.

It is only an option on the Denali but should be doable using Mats method.

Just thinking out loud. Can you re use the connector from the original clock spring by just removing the pins from the plug then do the same with the new one swapping plugs?

#27 · (Edited)
Yes, you can move the orginal clockspring airbag connector to the new one by taking the connector apart. Just use a small screwdrive to lift the tabs on the grey piece and lift it off. You will have to use a little force to get the white locking tab out. Swap the old connector onto the new clockspring and your ready to go. The picture shows the white connector I took off on the new coil. I put it on the old coil just for the picture.
