Fast Learn is actually going into the TCM and telling it you need it to start learning, usually done with a Tech 2.....DOC as well. The Allison is an adaptive learning transmission meaning it is continually learning anyway. Example, when you unhook your trailer, most will notice a more aggressive shift as the trans has adapted to making a shift fighting the drag of the extra weight and since it no longer has to, it shifts more aggresive for a cycle or two until it reorganizes itself and drops the pressure for apply rates accordingly. Fast learn allows the transmission to see exactly how long it takes to fill the cavity to engage a clutch and release it as well. Then it continues to adapt to the driver as well as the power for a certain amount of shift cycles. There are 4 scenerios of each upshift in which the TCM has to adapt. Once the trans settles in and falls out of Fast Learn, it will resort back to the adaptive learning. There are also clearing the tap cells as well as presetting the tap cells. Presetting is exactly how it sounds, presetting the values higher and allowing the adaptive learn to trim away pressure during clutch apply. Clearing the cells works the opposite and allows the adaptive learn to keep ramping up the pressure to the desired values.

With all that said, the down shift "reset" that is being refered to does not reset, restart, or enable any "relearn" in the Allison, only continuing the adaptive learn that is constantly enabled. The apply rate of the clutch changes as the scenerio is different downshifting than upshifting. It seems the computer sees it as a more aggressive rate that the clutch comes on since you do it three times and changes it's values accordingly, more aggressive obviously. Since it sees the last cycles as more aggressive than what you have been doing, it is already ahead of the game for enhancing the apply rate. It is all part of the adaptive learn in the Allison.

Putting a trans in Fast Learn is most crucial after a build or teardown as it gives the TCM full adavantage of a more aggresive learning scale as well as recognizing any clearance changes within clutch packs that would affect apply rate/time as well as release.
Well, there we have it. Thanks for the education.

Is there any other way to enable fast learn??

Big Dipper, Thanks for your input- I think it really makes sense what your saying.

"Reset Trans" is one of the Quadzilla options. I believe this erases the TCM's shifting tables and places it into fast-learn mode. Many here insist this is strongly recommended whenever making a significant tuning change, like +50HP.

When selecting this option the QZ warns that it's NOT recommended ... "Are you sure you want to reset?" I answered Yes, and then proceeded with the relearning advisories from this forum.

Take the trans through a half-dozen gradual/easy upshift cycles. Easy enough, just an easy drive through a half-dozen boulevard stoplights. Repeat at half-throttle for 6 cycles, then another 6 cycles at hard throttle. IIRC, it's next suggested to do the same in Tow/Haul mode, both up shifting and downshifting.

I felt this entire process seemed to be a touch of overkill. I only did the easy upshifting across about 6 stoplights, followed by a few half-throttle cycles, then a set of T/H cycles. Meanwhile, I never hammer the throttle from a standing start anyhow. I guess my Allison learned my moderate driving habits just fine as delivered from the dealer w/factory-base horsepower. I figure it will learn just fine with my normal driving habits on the +50 or +70 levels in Stealth-2.

I installed the +50 on my first day with the QZ, without any trans reset. I did notice some funky trans behavior, but not terribly different from the stocker funk. Upon switching up to +70 I elected to reset the trans. Cannot say if it has made any difference at all, neither Pro nor Con ... :confuzeld . . . but that might simply be a result of always trying to baby Ms.Allison.

OVERALL: couldn't be any happier with my new LMM, couldn't be any happier with the Stealth-2.
It's All Good ~!
