Allison in front of a big block

I'm a die hard Duramax guy and drive an 06 LBZ. I'm also a hard core off-roader having several Jeeps the last powered by a 545CU Ford big block.

In the off-road segment we have wanted more gears out of an auto capable of handling big HP - well in the segment I play in anyway. I came across a deal locally for a 6 speed Allison and everything attached to it for 700.00. I want to stuff either a Ram jet 502 or a 572 in front of it - I found out the Allison bolt pattern is the same as BB Chevy so it will bolt up maybe with some modes to get a flexplate to work but that's minor.

My question - I'm pretty sure there are electronics out there so I can control the Allison without the stock 6.6L or the gas 8.1L they came behind - any info or links would help a lot - I think I've seen some Dodge Cummins retrofits so it must be doable. I want to use the shifter handle, gear selector shifter like a paddle shifter as well. Also hints or links from anyone who has retrofitted one of these trannies would help a lot.

Pretty sure there is stand-alone controller for the Allison but unsure what all they do. But yes you can edit post up to 15 or some minutes after writing. After that they become locked. Just the way the Mods on here have it setup.

the only setups currently available are for the 5-speed, which doesnt have the tap-shift.

forget running the allison. Its big, its heavy, and it sucks a lot of power.

If you want something that will hold it and be bulletproof, build up a TH400.

If you really insist on running an allison and think it will be best option, set aside 6,500 dollars or so...

Well I got dry weights for the Allison at 330lbs. A TH 400 is 130lbs ( I had a NV 4500 behind the 545 its 195lbs) dry and if you want to 6 speed the 400 via a Gear Vendor they will build me one for a 4x4 aplication for 3600.00 and it weights 80lbs - so not much different and a lot more to control. The 572 is 650 ft lbs the same as a stock Duramax LBZ - the only difference is the 572 will rev more - why would it not hold up?

330lbs is dry, minus converter....im almost positive on that. Converter is another 65-70lbs or so.

Keep in mind the Allison is only rated at 5,000rpm max input speed.

I know about the TCI unit saw it at SEMA this past fall but both the TCI and the RS gear – new to me that one – are 2WD trannys and would need to be modified for 4WD if its possible – the Allisons at least is 4x4 – I plan to use an Atlas 4 speed T-case as well.

Gear ratios of these three 6 speeds – but as someone mentioned the 6 speed aparently is not swappable – yet they do make kits to turn a 5 speed Allision into a 6 speed Allision – so how does that work with the older gen programming?

as for making a 2wd trans into a 4wd trans; you only need to swap out the tail shaft and housing and get a adapter plate if needed to mount the x-fer case. I'm sure that if you called any of the trans co's and told them what you are doing for 4wd they will build the trans with the correct tail shaft/housing set up for you.

Well I bought the 6 speed, I have a buddy who works with heavy duty trucks and he said that the main Allison dealer here can do some programming with the stock computer and that it only needs a few inputs from the engine. My thoughts were I drive a 2006 anyway so for 700.00 for everything including the T-case torque converter flex plate computer and harness I was stupid not to buy it. I also notice that:
http://www.destroked.com/parts/electronics.shtml

While they work on Cummins installs say they are coming out with a harness for the 6 speed Allison so in case I can't get it to work I can use their pricy option or I'll have a low mileage Allison for sale :D

DESTROKED has had coming soon on the 6 speed kit for quite some time now. There 5 speed kit uses a PCS XFC box set-up to transmit the needed J1939 code messages for the TCM to get a TPS signal, tow/haul mode, and OD/LO. It uses a stock 03 TCM calibration from what I gathered from talking to them. The 6 speed TCM is a whole different animal though as it uses CAN BUS for it's communications and is tied into several key ECM inputs. Cracking CAN BUS is going to be difficult, so there is no telling how long it might take em to do it. As for an ALLISON dealer, they may be able to find you a calibration out of a medium duty truck to work, but I don't know if there is such an animal to allow a remote TPS to work with a 6 speed GEN 4 TCM and the ALLISON 1000 tranny. I've talked to several ALLISON dealers and none of them said they could even touch a TCM though loaded with a GM 2500/3500 calibration in it.
