Does anyone know of a company that makes a 5w40 or 0w40 conventional oil? I have not have much success finding a non-synthetic 5w40 oil.

NONE,
0-40 & 5-40 all synthetic
Anything 0 is synthetic

The lowest I've ever seen a conventional HDEO is 10w30. Even then its hard to find and is more commonly a syn-blend anyway.

Why are you looking for 5w-40 conventional?

From what I have read, it is not possible for a conventional/dino oil to have a wide range like 5w-40 or 0w-40. The 5 and 0 is their viscosity when the oil is in cold conditions (when engine is off). The viscosity is thinner.. than a 15.

It might be able to be done with a good conventional base stock, but the amount of VIIs they'd have to add would be huge, and it would likely shear quickly, and the VII package would quite possibly displace some portion of other needed additives.

The negatives outweigh the positives; hence the market does not offer such a product. What can be done and what should be done are two totally different things at times; this is a good example of such.
