Time for new tires, debating on 235/85/16 vs stock 215s. I regularly tow a 14,000 lb toy hauler. how will going to 235s affect the towing.

I have been thinking about 235's also. Some say there is room, and some say they rub. I think that there is some difference in overall width between manufacturers. If you look at specifications, different manufacturers list width from 9.3 to 9.7 inches. Most 215's are between 8.2 and 8.8. inches. If someone has photos of 235's that don't rub loaded, I would like to see them, and what brand they are.

Mine had 235's on it when I bought it, and they rubbed, even empty. Since then, I put on Eagle aluminum wheels. They look like they have more backspace, but I have not found the measurements, or had a chance to measure them.

They won't effect it at all, if you are concerned about loss of power. The 235's are wider by a little bit so it might be more stable while towing, and they will look better. With 14K on they will most likely rub at the section width, or the fat part of the side wall...not good. Spacers of 1.5 to 2" wide will fix it. Also, with the spacers you could go to 265/75/16s, same height as the 235's but wider. THis may effect fuel mileage slightly..not enough to matter.......to me anyways. :D

i had 235s on my new lmm for a few months and couldnt tell a difference from the stockers. then i went to 285s and noticed alittle difference when towing.

as far as them rear touching i had 1" when unloaded and just about as much when towing, they didnt flex much at all execpt for when hitting large bumps but even then they didnt touch. and this was pulling a 24k gn

1/4 spacer with stock studs and 235-85R16/E on
It is hard to tell from the pictures but the gap is about 1 inch top and sides and about ¾ to ½ inch on the bottom. It is about the same gap I had with the stock 215’s on. There is about 700lbs in the truck when the pictures were taken and I would be very surprised if they would touch with a heavy load. The E rated tires don’t bulge much. My big concern was if the lug nuts will back off but time will tell if I have a problem there and if I need to go with longer studs.

Anyone else has any info on the 1/4 inch spacers with stock studs and 235-85R16/Es on

Update

I have been running them for about a month now and have no problems with the Lugs backing off ,or tire rub. I have had my 3 hourse goose neck on + the 700 lbs of sand and there is no rubbing

To run the 235,s I feel you need the 1/4 spacers to give you the extra room to avoid the tire rub when loaded

I have 235's on my 01 with Eagle wheels and 1/4" spacers. Gap between tires is about 1" (Michelen LTX's). They apparently rub when hitting bumps as there is a clean 1" wide ring around the inner sidewalls of the tires. This ring wasn't visible with the tires on the truck. I noticed it the other day while doing a brake job. PO had the truck loaded pretty heavy all the time with concrete pumping equipment and a heavy trailer, but I'm not sure how much weight was on it. I won't really know if it's a problem for me until I get the truck loaded a few times, but I don't like the idea of the tires ruffing under ANY circumstances.

This has been a debate and discussion on this page for some 7-8 years. Funny how these posts resurface. There are some good pictures. I even posted some back 3 years ago. I am on my 3rd set had Bridgestone Revo's. I have towed trailers from 11-15K lbs. I have Camper on most the time now, ~ 2500lbs loaded. No issues ever. I suspect they might have kissed from time to time but this simply not a big deal. I keep rears at nearly 80PSI and I do have Alcoa wheels. there is always about a 1/4" gap. Spacers will put your mind at ease that they are not touching but then you will worry about studs, lugs backing out and all that good stuff. It is the price of modifying.

I absolutely prefer the 235 tire.

My 235's rubbed, I am running Toyo Hyperadials, I installed 2" Fred Spacers and couldn't be happier.

Cowboyjer,
If your question was about my wheels, I use a an aluminum polish compound. I am pretty religious that when I rotate tires and wheels, I polish while they are off truck at shop. Easy to do with wheels off truck and no lug nuts or caps. Once a year keeps them nice.

They are due again

Thanks for the compliment on the truck. Had it nearly 10 years now. Original owner. Dually number 33 of 2000 with Dmax Alli option. Definitely got my money out of it. Only regret would be heated seats.
