02 Duramax suddenly dies...

If anyone has similar experience or can shed some light on this please chime in.
One day last week the truck dies after starting it and driving 300 feet. I then cycled the key off and then on and started it up after it kinda seemed like it was not getting fuel as it cranked a alot more that normal and then drove off. Then an hour later it died again and this time started right after cycling the key off and on.

It bogs down when floored 2500 rpm on up and acts like it has no power or fuel flow.

The idle is a rolling idle: smooth and then rough and smooth and so on with it in park or neutral. You don't notice it in drive or reverse.

It has not had injector replacement and it has only had neutral safety switch replaced and fuel filters. No mods, boxes, bone stock and clean fuel filter.

I hope I have been clear enough.

Thanks

Dale

Sounds like one of these possibilities:
1)Air leak at the fuel filter (can cause no start)
2)Clogged Fuel filter (can cause air problem and power loss)
3)Clogged vent in fuel fill cap. (can cause no start and power loss)

I wouldl change the fuel filter, and make sure the WIF sensor and top O ring
are properly installed, and the filter is tight.

I've been having a recurring issue with this, even after several filter changes and taking extra care to ensure the O rings are seating correctly and all is snug. Filters haven't been particularly dirty and I run Fuel Power and Power Service at every fillup. I'm suspecting an intermittent air leak of some kind. I got to wondering the other day about whether or not there is any way air can escape past the primer on top of the filter head. I'm convinced it isn't a contaminated fuel issue, though. If I can't locate the source, I'm going to probably have to take the same route Frank Blum did and double-clamp everything from the tank to the filter. Mine will be fine after multiple fillups and thousands of miles, and then one day - click! So I jump out, work the primer until firm, hop back in, fire it off and go without any further hints of trouble for howerver long it takes - could be a week, month, six months, who knows? Never seems to matter how much fuel is in it, how hard or easy I drive it - in fact, one of the last two times it happened I was creeping along at about 20 mph down a back country road - the next time was while on an overpass, crossing an Interstate, pulling a 9000# travel trailer. Same thing, though - re-prime and take off, no more problems. I've now gone more than a week and a half since that last time, and truck is running well - though I have also noticed the "rolling idle" that Dale mentions, though if someone didn't know the truck they might not notice the difference.

Do you have access to a kent moore vacuum gauge? if so i would plug it in and take some readings.. if you have an air leak it will read abnormally low..

Any Edge mods? I had the same symptom and Edge was the cause/fix.

Replace all the hose clamps. The oem ones which a pair of pliers will remove lose their tension once removed. Did you check the filter head bleed screw to ensure it was sealed? New 'gas' cap?

good luck
Bleed screw seems to be sealing correctly, though I'm probably going to replace it at some point with one of the valved bleeders or the stainless screw sold by one of the vendors here. Did replace the fuel cap with a locking type about a month and a half ago that was specifically for diesel application, but problem has existed both prior and since. The previous owner had installed an auxiliary tank, which had been removed prior to my purchasing the truck. I replaced the remaining supply and return rubber lines with proper multi-fuel lines and new clamps in the hopes that this was where the air leak might have been, but no change in behavior. The compression fittings are a possibility, I guess, but I'd think there would be evidence of fuel seepage around them.

I think my next step will be a vacuum test, if I can't find anything obvious.

Don't forget that the fuel pump could be malfunctioning as well.
This is what I'm hoping it isn't. :(
