there has been a lot of ice and freezing rain here in oklahoma lately. i was driving down the highway saturday with my wipers on and heard a loud pop and noticed my passenger side wiper quit. i took the truck (6000 miles) to the dealer today to get it fixed, warranty denied, they say it is not their fault if the wipers freeze up and break. has anyone else had this problem

I agree with dozerboy to try another dealer. That's in bad taste that they denied warranty coverage, as those wipers should be able to withstand that kind of weather. Good luck.

come on man i am also from california, tulare to be exact, but wipers are not going to hold up to 0 degree weather. if there frozen to the window the smartest thing would be not to turn them on till defrosted. in those temps you should pull your wipers out so they dont sit on the window or put cardboard under them.

If the truck had 6k on it they should be repaired at no expense IF they failed like you said. Bark up the tree of comand until you get satisfaction

Good luck

Not sure where you got the idea that his wipers were frozen to the window? What I read in his post was that he was driving down the highway with his wipers on and heard a loud pop, then noticed his passenger side wiper quit. It'd be hard for it to freeze to the window while it's moving. :deal:

sorry about that i misread it, but i would imagine if the fluid instantly freezes in cold temps i could imagine the temps breaking the wiper motor, but in that case the dealership should still cover it.

It is covered under the bumper to bumper warranty. This is a safety item and they shouldn't give you a hard time.

it sounds like the linkage broke.

Regardless of the temperature, the wipers should and will function.

If they're frozen to your windshield, prior to running them just pick em up and let em bonk the window a little, so they aren't frozen to it. They'll move from there.

On our trucks you can't prop them up, so you are stuck with the bonk. Putting cardboard doesn't work too well, because then you're going to get cardboard frozen to your windshield.. but what do i know

it's freezing 1/2 of the year

I can't understand what that dealer was thinking. Those trucks go through validation testing in Milford MI and in Canada in the winter just to test that type of thing for crying out loud. A safety item like the wiper linkeage isn't supposed to break under normal use. A use by the way that GM did validation testing on! :rippedhan

I agree file a complaint with GM Customer Service. At least then the Area Rep will know his dealer is sticking it to the customers.

I live in the great norwest. Up by Seattle and we get tons of rain a year. It rarely gets below freezing and if something happened to my wipers i would be screwed!!!! If the dealer wouldn't cover then i would not be happy and go back to that dealership!!!!

I have seen quite a few of these in the past, first off tell the dealer to pound it and go elsewhere. It is covered by your warranty, what happens is the wiper arm gets bound up from the ice and pops off a knuckle in the linkage. Usually it happens right at the motor so you have no wipers at all. The knuckle can be put back on but once it has been popped it wont stay under a heavy load. The dealer will have to replace the whole wiper module "assembly" which they probably wont have in stock. Just be sure from now on to shut off the wipers before the ignition and make sure the windsheild is clean before turning on the wipers or they will break again.
