Today I took out the thermostats and boiled them up using a temperature probe. They were both slow to open up (one particularly so). Here's a pic of how they looked at 200*F

The two new ones opened earlier, faster and more fully. I'm going to flush and refill tomorrow. Fingers crossed this is at the heart of my heat problem.

I actually welded a piece of aluminum pipe in the base of the thermostat housing over the bypass channel and machined it flat to fit a John Deere thermostat with a lower stem to block the bypass. Made a huge difference in cooling

Ok, cool. I'll keep bypass restriction up my sleeve. First I'll see how the new stats and coolant goes. They're in and I've got the suburban running again. I'll give it a test tonight.

The bypass restrictor is a necessity for duo thermostat crossovers.
