As far as I'm aware 2003 was the first year in the Chevys. I would guess GMC to be the same.

The 02's with the LT package did for sure, and possibly 01's had Auto climate control but there was not a digital readout

When you say there was not a digital readout, what did the dash look like? Does it look similar to the 3 manual knobs (fan, temp, and vent settings)?

Better yet, can someone tell me how to positively identify whether a truck has auto temp control on it when looking at a picture of the dash? Is it distinctly different than the 3 manual control knobs?

they started it as an option in 2001. In 2001 and 2002 it had three knobs and no digital display, but it said "computer climate control" on it I think, and the fan knob has like 30 positions (speeds) instead of 5.

in 2003 they changed to the digital display on the auto climate models.

My 02 has the auto air, there is a sensor box on the windshield to the right of the visor, and a sensor just to the left of your head on the drivers side.
