Hello,

I am looking for a used duramax 4x4 with the allison. I have not found too many near me and the ones I have found have been beat pretty good. I have a few friends in the auto business looking for me and my question is, what problem areas should I look for when looking at a used d/a? I have owned 2 psd trucks and can look them over in 2 minutes and see any problem areas, but I don't know much about these trucks. Thanks in advance for any tips or advice.

Mike,

First welcome to the froum.

For your info.

The 2001 model year is unique in the respect that many first year runs incur changes throughout the year and many changes were made . If I was looking used I would be looking for a late 2001 or a 2002. JMHO

Depending on body style I would be looking for a 1 piece driveshaft, preferably the "telephone pole" aluminum one.

Next I would look at the hours meter, this is done by holding down the reset for the trip OD when the truck is off. High hours with low miles doesn't mean anything is bad but could raise suspicians if way out of whack.

Look for any leaks especially under the truck. I would also look for fresh paint, overspray in the jambs or any thing out of the ordinary.

CarFax has a special IIRC on reports. It's worth the $$$$$.

As with any used truck or car see if the previous owner can be contacted.

I like to find out who the original owner was. If you can and you can talk to them and see who they are, sometimes you can get a better feeling for how it was used and maintained.

If the owner was under 55 there is more of a chance they used power adders than over 55.

Just my opinion.Edited by: hoot

Thanks for the info so far, keep it coming. What changes were made throughout the 01 model year? I was looking at 01's because of price. My friend had a 01 that was a great truck, it did not have an aluminum driveshaft I don't believe. Since I will be looking at 01's, what should I be looking for that could be wrong? Thanks a lot,

Mike
