There have been many, many discussions about this so you might search just a little bit. You also didn't mention which rear end you have, although most have the G80. If it's the G80, then the simple answer is to use the official GM "grape juice" lube. Otherwise, it needs some, but not too much, friction modifier. Along with many others, I've had good results with Mobil 1 75-90 synthetic "LS" lube (I'm on the road and can't tell you exactly what's on the bottle). There are other good solutions, and some that will cause problems (e.g., chattering).

I want to change the fluid in the rear differential on my 08 gmc 2500 4x4 duramax and i was wanting to know what kind of diff fluid do i need and how much?

I would recommended factory oil.
