Well today I took went and got my batteries tested again. Had them tested where they actually drain and recharge it... needless to say I bought 2 new batteries. That and It would not start a few weeks ago with the radio on for about 15 min.

Also found out that my 8th digit of my vin is F.

Oh, and yes, I’ll be changing out the o-rings and what not on my oil filter adapter to stop all that oil from drenching the front u-joint. Luckily it’s not from the cooler lines. Mine are still in great shape at the block. But I will install a new kit from Leroy soon anyway.

Yup, I actually picked up a pair of the same size earlier this year from a guy on Facebook. They were brand new and $100 for the pair. Been waiting for the price to go down. So I now have 5 brand new tires for $600 and change.

Scored some good forged lower CA’s off a 3500 at a nearby pick a part yard. The Energy Suspension bushings for them showed up in to mail too. Borrowing a press from a buddy this weekend so may get the old pieces pressed out to clean them up this weekend.

Nice score on the forged arms. There are so few upullit yards up here in MA anymore. A big company came in and bought up a bunch of them and abruptly closed them all. I’m guessing the environmental and insurance costs are keeping them closed, at least to the public. The one that’s right down the road from me told me they discourage people from pulling their own parts and said I want allowed to pull any parts off engines. So why do you advertise it as a self serve parts yard??? And I can’t pull anything attached to an engine? Crazy.

Well, I’m getting pretty good at changing out starters. 700 miles on the last one. Got the old one out Saturday evening, got the new one in Sunday morning. While I was at it, the RF brake caliper had been sticking so I replaced that while the wheel was off. Then, one more trip to town when the short brake line that goes from the master cylinder to the front brake lines splitter block failed. So, anyway hopefully I’m done wrenching on it for a few days.

What is killing your starters?

have you checked the battery cables? The batteries? What are the starters doing when they fail?

The starter that failed last fall was possibly the original starter. It had definitely been in there a long time. The replacement starter, the issue was solenoid related. The starter drive would engage the ring gear, but the starter motor itself would not energize and crank the engine. Since it was a warranted complete starter assembly, I replaced the entire unit. The batteries were new last year, and individually load tested perfect. The cables and connections were new as well.

Highly recommend upgrading to ARP starter bolts, torqued to suppled spec and properly installed support bracket.

The starter bolts are factory with the knurling. They are just fine. Starter brace…absolutely it is installed.

If this starter goes to pot, I will definitely consider a new AC Delco. At the time the first starter gave up last fall, money was tight enough that I hated to spend the extra $$ for on AC Delco. I hardly put enough miles on it to justify the extra expense.

If original they are over 30 yrs old, no telling if they've been over torqued/stretched in the past.
For <$20 worth the upgrade.
There have been WAY to many posts over the years about broken starter bolts on these engines.

I was having some issues with what I believe people on the site are calling fish bite. I wound up removing the IP filter in-line harness and now it is gone! I also cleaned every ground on the truck and that solved a weird issue I was seeing with cluster gauges. The other odd thing that was fixed also was I used to have a bad vibration inside the truck from below the dash by the heater box. When I cleaned and tightened the body to chassis ground the vibration is now gone. I assume that stud used for grounding on the passenger side possibly goes through the firewall and secures the heater box as well?

I have been reading everything I can on this site and my truck is consistently running better and better every time I learn something on here and then apply it to my truck. I greatly appreciate this forum and I doubt I would be in the spot I am now without the wealth of knowledge added by people on this site. I am very grateful

My final point for the day is.....I actually like the sound of this engine even though it is what some people say as being loud.

If you all had to give a good (even funny) description of the engine sound that a 6.5 makes I would love to hear what you think.

Thank you all again, this forum is a life saver.

Guy I worked with called my truck a "Clatter-Box". Have also had a few folks ask me if my engine was one of those old gas 350 conversion POS.

Had my '93 backed up to load lumber at Lowes the other day with the engine idling. Some other old guy stopped next to me and said,"Man, that thing sounds good." I figure he was another mechanic and had an appreciation for certain types of music.
