Lately under high load with the T/C locked my truck stutters and loses power for a fraction of a second repeatedly. If you roll on it at 65 or so when it spools up it accelerates but loses power hard enough for you to feel it jerking you back and forth in the seat a little. I hooked up the predator and my balance rates are within spec. My FPR got replaced about 3 months ago and the fuel filter is a napa gold that is about 2 weeks old. It has been doing this for a few weeks. It seems to get worse when the truck is low on fuel. I have searched and read alot but nothing similar to this. The demanded rail pressure is 152-155 at WOT in 5th over 75 and the actual is within 3 or 4. Normal driving the FPR said 34-36 % on the predator. At WOT over 75 it drops to 22-25%. Does this sound right?

I read this thread http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/showthread.php?t=107747&highlight=fuel+pickup+tube

And think maybe I have an in tank problem. Could junk at the bottom of the tank be causing this problem? I want to drop the tank this weekend and check it out. Any tips on the tank removal? I dont want to remove the bed, do I need any special tools? Am I heading in the right direction?

unplug the taillights and trailer harness and take all the bolts out on the driver side. then loosen up the passenger side quite a bit and then lift the driver side up. this is the easiest way I think to access the fuel tank. especially if it has very much fuel in it.

Just like beebelawn said remove the tank. If you have a hoist, lift the truck. Put a tranny jack under the tank. Remove the main fill hose along with the breather hose. Then remove the two straps. I believe they are 15mm bolts. slowly lower the tank. When it is down a couple of inches remove the fuel lines, and harness. Be careful not to bend the fuel lines too much. Once the tank is down remove the lid and sender. See if any of the lines are clogged, bent, or if there is anything clogging the pickup. Make sure the the vent is not clogged, and that there is nothing wrong with the cap. This could cause a restriction in the fuel system. While you have the tank out, in the engine compartment remove the main fuel line and blow air towards the tank. This will tell you if there is a restriction to the engine.

Let me know what you find.

take all the bolts out of the bed. If you have lift put a pole jack at the front center of the bed. then slowly lower the truck down till there is enough room to get in there. If your on the ground you can come up with a smilar solution. Example: Lift the front of the bed up for enough room. If you jack from the side the bed can hit your cab or slide of or worse fall on you. Jacking from the front. the bumper wont let it slide anywhere.

Thanks, it also sounds like it could be an air leak... I am going to check the fuel filter for now. I dont know about lifting the bed, it would be a real PITA to mess with the gooseneck hitch. I know the truck used to get alot of Walmart diesel before I bought it. There was a scare a while back about rust flakes clogging the picup screen on the 7.3 PSDs locally. I need to get the fuel line disconnects from Vatozone. I plan on running the truck pretty close to empty before I drop the tank. What line off of the fuel filter mount is the one coming from the tank? Where is the return line plumbed through.

I am gonna go check the filter and drain my WIF separator right now. Either way my Saturday seems pretty booked now :D

I went to drain the WIF and nothing came out. I left the valve open and pumped the primer 7 or 8 times before it got hard. Is this normal? Nothing came out of the WIF fitting. Is it supposed to be just opened a few turns or completely removed?

Still had the same problem on the way home.

I am by no means a diesel newb but this problem is bothering me

Edit : and when it happens the boost gauge dops a bit each time.
