As I was sitting in the drivethru window at the bank today, there was a 1/2 ton chevy in front of me with one of those composite beds on it. Has anyone here ever compared the weight between steel VS composite??
GM initially looked at composite beds for the GM600 series, with the weight savings in mind. That was back around 95. Back then, by the time they added the weight of the reinforcing and extra thickness of the composite material, the weight difference wasn't that much.
Having said that - it was 10 years ago, and the composite material of today may be stronger and thinner, thus lighter.
