This may be a stupid question, but just wondering how long or to what temp. do you guys warmup before you start driving. I often hate when I'm late for work, jump in truck, start and get on highway.

At what temp. If its 50+ 60 seconds is enough to bring oil pressure up assuming the first part of your trip has a few minutes of slow driving. If its 30-50 I would say 3-5 minutes. If its sub 30 and no block heater its gonna take a while IMHO

Invest in an auto start like the astrostarts if it really worries you. I usually let mine run about 15 minutes before taking off in the A.M.

OUr 5500 has a built-in warmup feature. On cold mornings (like this morning - about 5 degrees F or -15 celcius) shortly after the truck starts, it goes into "high idle" where it recirculates the exhaust to bring it up to operating temps. This takes about 4-5 minutes, depending on how cold it is.

If the truck senses it's getting cold again, while idling, it will go into "high idle" automatically, and then drop back to regular idle when warmed back up.

Just :grd: If your from Humble, TX, warm up is a non issue if that's your home port. If you go to Colorado or way up in Yankee territory, then you may need to start your truck and have a cup of coffee. That should about do it...:D

As long as the needle is up(anything on the gauge) is good enough.

Here's my morning routine:
1. Start truck back out of garage no matter what the temp.(It's been single digits the last few mornings)

2. Drive 100 yards to the hog house and leave it running while I do chores; 10-30 minutes.

3. Drive another 50 yards and stop and feed the horses.

4. Drive 1.5 miles to the main farm.

From there it could sit all day or go on any number of runs from 1 to xxx miles.

I never plug it in and I'm sure there are people cringing at this post, but hey, I don't think it has to be babied for every mile if the maintainence is done.

The Dmax doesn't mind if you get in and go, but the oil in the crankcase is pretty darn heavy and will be bypassing the filter in all likelihood. I alwyas prefer a good idle to warm up when it's below 40°f. The colder it is, the longer I let it go. I have altered the elevated idle programming on mine to make it more active and dropped the RPM to 1100 where it seems more comfortable.

How did you drop the elevated idle rpm?

IMHO I like to start it and as soon as the oil pessure gauge goes up I drive it. I drive very slow (like a grandma) until it starts to warm up, this seems to help warm it up faster. But if you will be getting up to high speeds quickly then maybe drive it around the block a few times to let the trans warm up a little.

When its really cold out, like single digits or below 0, I can leave my truck idle for 20 minutes and it wont be up to temp. Would I be correct in assuming that it takes longer because I have the EGR blocked? Even if that's the case I'm not going to unblock it cause I dont want that sooty crap going in my engine.

i think that having the egr blocked doesnt make a difference cause i do the same thing as you and i dont have the egr blocked. it never gets to operating temp when its that cold.

I let mine warm up for 20 minuts also.. When we are in single digits I found that the transmission does not like to shift very well if I warm it up any less then 20.

I've often heard up here that you should start it, and start driving (easy) as soon as it's running smoothly. With my DMAX, that is right away. Doesn't hurt to scrape the ice off for a couple of minutes so you can see!!! By using winter front, the warmup is quicker driving than idling.

You can extend the engine life a lot by not putting your foot down for the first 10-15 minutes. Meanwhile, the tranny and differentials are starting to warm up as well.

The wear and tear idling cold (slow or fast - while you're not getting anywhere) is almost as great as driving easy, and by starting right away you're getting some mileage out of those engine hours!!!

Best of all is to keep the truck in a heated garage.

Second best is to use the block heater for a few hours before starting.

In any case, try to drive for at least half an hour or more every few trips so stuff can warm up and dry out properly.

I won't get heat in the truck until I drive it (with the egr blocked) if it's below 15 degrees.

I've got a remote start and only use it when it's below 45 or so out. Otherwise start it, wait a few seconds and go. Key is just to take it easy on the truck until it warms up.

I believe all lly's and newer have elevated idle that kicks in based on a few different variables.

everyone having warmup problems definately needs to activate high idle it will cut warmup time in half. either activate it in the dic or if you dont have a dic push the gas pedal to the floor and press the brake 3 times in 5 seconds with the key in the on position but NOT STARTED.
