There has been a lot of talk lately about who sells the WAP 'quick heat' glow plugs....

The ones I have installed in my truck were bought from indusa....

Here is a link to WAP's webpage indicating who sells their plugs...you will notice that SS Diesel makes the list...

If you have any questions concerning WAP glow plugs, i'm here to address them. I also can answer questions concerning other glow plug manufacturers and controller issues.

Have you read the entirety of this thread or any number of other glow plug threads here? I would say that the question has been posed: What is the root cause of the reliability issue with WAP I/H GP's and what is WAP doing to address this issue (concern)?

BTW - I am not a WAP user, but I did stay at Holiday Inn last night...:D

Why did they [my WAP plugs] burn out so quickly?

If you need numbers off of the plugs I would be happy to post them....

Do ya think this guy is for real? Don't you think you'd post an e-mail address or a phone number or something if you really wanted to help.

Great if it's for real, but the needle on my BS detector is starting to move to the right.

I don't have any beef because I didn't buy WAP plugs.

Yes he's for real. I spoke with him Wednesday and they are taking this seriously. WAP has stood up and taken notice. My hope is that we can beef them up to withstand 15 second glow times with repeated afterglows.

My customers (hopefully) have sent in their failed plugs for warranty. It will be a couple of weeks until there is a test plug available.

Jason can share what details he wants from here...
Glad to have some direct help here! Thanks guys!

I wish I had bought my glows from you guys. SS Diesel has not gotten back to me regarding my warranty.....
As for WAP glows, great to see the Wellman company at least trying to fix the problem with these crappy plugs. Thanks.
Come to think of it, I have Kennedy/WAP quick heats and I have been getting lots of white smoke on startup. I will test mine this weekend.

Well that's good to know. Good job to you and him for getting some help to the guys that are having problem. It's nice to see someone stand behind their product, that they sell (you) and make (Jason).

My hat is off to both of you.

Dave
No Manual Override...

>>>"My hope is that we can beef them up to withstand 15 second glow times with repeated afterglows."<<<

Mine Failed with just the stock glow plug relay, no manual override, and stock programming in the computer...

Just FYI

Thanks JJB

Regards,
I understand the concerns and frustrations of early glow plug failures. We are doing our best to identify and solve the problem. It appears that the plugs run hot in the afterglow (alternator voltage). Please keep in mind that if any changes are made to the stock control strategies (ie. changing the pulse time or eliminating it all together) will greatly reduce the life of the plug. In an attempt to resolve the problem i am implementing a design change to "cool" them off a bit. This should not have a great effect on the preglow performance, but should help in the afterglow. However, i still do not recommend altering the stock control strategy.

For those who have failed 6A843G050 WAP glow plugs, we will replace those with the updated version when they become available.(1-2 weeks). Please coordinate the returns through the company in which you purchased the plugs. (We can only replace the plugs when we physically recieve the failed plugs)

We do a great deal of benchmark testing of our products against the other leading glow plug manufactures. We will stand behind our plugs so please keep me informed of any issue.

Also, if any one has questions about anything dealing with glow plugs (WAP or any other brand) and their systems let me know.

Thanks for the great reply. You are contributing vastly to the image of your company and its products by being up front with this crowd. There are many grizzled 6.5 veterans here and I am sure that this type of communication is refreshing and reassuring. Keep up the good work researching this issue and please keep us informed of your progress...

This is a fair enough statement....but then why does Walt from SS Diesel advocate his manual GP override in conjunction with the quick heats made by WAP....
There's really no need for a manual glow control (except claiming to have an innovative product ) unless you cannot start cleanly on the std glow time. I've been working with tuning the glow cycle to increase pre glow duration as well as slightly increase the pulsed post glow times in my chip tuning. This helps the 18:1 guys start more cleanly.
Ever been to Saskatchewan?

Or Northern Alberta with a 6.2
The mere mention of Saskatoon in December makes me feel cold.Have to experience it to understand it I guess.
Glow time is varaible based on ECT. It's pretty easy to make these things start with programming or plugging in.

If you still need to manually operate the plugs, I'd suggest using very brief post start glow cycles.

It's also quite easy to use the OE relay to run longer cycles manually particularly on the 94-5 models.

Uh-huh... see above post about winter in Saskatchewan.

Changing the programming vis-a-vis ECT input is beyond the range of most of us backyard mechanics...

Provision of a portable current bush would likely work, but is also impractical.

That sounds pretty good, but if you want to use it post-start, you gotta get it to start, first (see above post on Winter in Saskatchewan)

Now there's an idea I can get my head around.

Thing about 94/95 models is they don't want to re-do a complete glow cycle until things sit for too long, which is why manual control works so well.

Glow, turn over a bit, glow again, start, feather fuel, pray for Spring to come sooner ...

Or use FyshGuide's wife's hairdryer into the air intake for 5 minutes. (Assuming, of course, that you have access to a portable current bush to run the hair dryer)

Or move south. WAY south.

I think you have to live here to understand the humor in that post....:D ...
