If I buy a used BCM, will it "plug and play" with my truck or does it need to be reflashed to my truck? Anything I should be aware of with buying a used BCM? The ones I'm looking at do have warranties, but only for defective units, not for compatibility issues.

Thanks,

Why would you want to buy an extra body control module? Do you mean PCM?

If you buy a used bcm it will have to be reprogrammed to your truck unless the truck had the same options. I put power windows, locks, and mirrors on my 02, and they did not work with the original bcm. I put a used bcm from an 02 that had the additional options I added, and everything worked. I didn't have to take it to the dealer. If you get lucky, and get one that had the same options, you will have to do the passlock reset procedure, or your truck won't start.

Nope - I mean BCM. I'm trying to gain control over my headlights. I have a Canadian truck that's now a US truck and I can't override my headlights.

I called GM who called the dealer, the dealer called GM Tech support ... etc, etc. Anyway, the dealer said that in order for me to gain normal (USA) operation of the headlights (ie: be able to temp override headlights), that I needed to replace my BCM with a new one and have it reflashed to US specs. The part number on mine is 15095334 and I needed part number 15063578 for this to work. I bought a used BCM, with the new part number, off of ebay for $30 and wanted to try it before coughing up the $80 +/- for a reflash. Either way, it's a lot better than the $280 that the dealer wants for a new BCM.

I wanted to try this "fix" and make sure it works, before I posted the reason. I don't want to get peoples hopes up ... even though mine are!

Since you have a used BCM already, you might get lucky and it will be "plug & play". In 02, the BCM controls: audible warnings, auto door locks, auto headlight control, interior lighting, keyless entry, passlock, RAP retainded accesory power. It also provides the ignition on/off signals to the other modules and serial data communications. So after you try it, check that all the above are working. If they aren't, then you probably need to have the Tech II programming. Before you start the truck, you will have to program passlock. I sent you an email with the instructions for you to do yourself. If you put the original BCM back in, you shouldn't have to do the passlock again.

I wonder why they can't reflash yours to US specs?

236ek - Thanks for the passlock instructions. This type of thing is exactly why I was asking if it's a plug & play component. What is RAP (retained accessory power)?

Tom - I really don't know ... and neither did the dealer's service dept. I'm guessing that maybe it's a BCM for Canadian vehicles? Or, it's just another way for GM to try and get more $$ out of me?

Thanks,

My money's on the latter answer. GM is a very cost conscience company (yeah, I know, penny wise, pound foolish) and I'd be willing to bet the module is the same until programmed.

Maybe a different dealer - or someone here would know if it can be done.

RAP is when you remove your key from the ignition, the windows and radio still work until you open a door. It also times out in 10 minutes if you don't open your door. I checked the BCM I removed from my 02 USA truck and it is part number 15095334. The BCM I am running now in the truck is the same part number, and everything is working fine, including the override. Maybe the number GM gave you supersedes the old number?

I called the dealer parts dept, and both the BCM numbers, 15095334 & 15063578 have been superseded to 15081796. Based on this, I would bet that your original BCM could be reflashed to US specs. It seems like GM is always changing their part numbers to confuse everyone.

I am confused as to why GM Tech Support said that it needed to be replaced and can't be reflashed?!? Though I can't really argue with the dealer since they're actually willing to do this when no one else has.

I guess we'll find out soon enough.
