I posted previously regarding weather to use Win2000 or XP, and I decided on XP, but now have a somewhat different problem.

1. Cannot download more than 10...12K from PCM in EFI Tuning tool. After a few seconds, green USB light stops flashing and program stops downloading, comes up with error messages about lost communication.

2. Didn't even try to upload a tune to the PCM, I think this is just asking for trouble.

3. Cannot maintain connectivity in EFI Scanning tool for more than 5-10 seconds. Again, green USB light stops flashing and EFI Scan comes up with a "no interface cable found" error message. Will not reconnect, and only reconnects SOMETIMES after unplugging and replugging Flashcan device.

I've tried the following solutions so far:

-Different USB ports; computer has 3, I've tried all 3. One seems to work slightly better than the other 2, but still is unusable.
-Powered USB hub; D-Link 4 port powered USB hub, makes no change.
-Re-installed Flashscan drivers, re-installed EFILive, all brand new correct versions, re-booted computer with Flashscan plugged into USB and into OBDII.
-Key is on RUN, I've tried Scan with engine on and engine off, and Tune with engine off. Plenty of battery power.
-Re-installed Windows XP on computer; swaped out hard drive, swapped out memory, formatted new HD, re-installed XP, installed all windows updates, new drivers directly from manufacturers.
-Different USB PC-to-Flashscan cable; tried different cables from different manufacturers, no change.

-Tried EFI Scan and EFI Tune on seperate IBM laptop; EFI Tune works excellent, and EFI Scan works OK. Occasionally, scan disconnects and has to be restarted, but the connection usually lasts a few minutes instead of a few seconds; granted, this is while driving and moving. Tune has had zero problems running on this laptop.

It seems like whenever things go bad, the yellow ODBII LED is still flashing. This would lead me to believe it's a USB issue, but I don't know of anything else in the computer that could be causing problems.

I've been working on this issue for a couple months now, and I'm starting to lose patience, mostly with this computer setup. I don't believe its a problem with EFILive, but it would be REAL good if I could get it to work well on the PC setup I already have in the truck, otherwise I'll be looking at ripping out all the wiring and hardware I installed, and replacing it with a different computer :( .

schulte, shoot me a PM with your address and we will get another unit out to you, I think you have done more than enough to try various fixes. I don't know if the V1 unit you have is faulty or not, but it's worth a try.

Cheers,
Ross

PM sent; it's much appreciated. Again, I don't think its an issue with EFILive, but I'm definately willing to try just to rule it out as a problem.

I bet if you went to your laptop manufacturer's website you will find a new BIOS for your laptop. Reflash your BIOS, then download their newest chipset drivers (some have it in the bios flash some MFGRs do not) and reboot.

In some cases, IBM laptops, and Toshiba Satellite's have this problem. I know from experience that these small flashes do a world of good. It corrects the unstable addressing of some ports including USB interfaces. My old A20 Satellite P4 3.2/1gig ram would lose my GTCO digitizer in USB mode, but if i switched to a serial connection (different address on board) it would work flawlessly. Once my provider and I found the problem, we both felt a little sheepish.

I would try that fix before sending your EFI Live back.
Good luck.

Thanks for the suggestion, I actually did both a BIOS flash and a new installation of the chipset software during the most recent re-install of XP. The board I'm running uses an Intel 865G family chipset, chipset 82801. The southbridge chipset (controls I/O, including USB) on the board is a ICH5/ICH5R. The chipset software I installed was the latest from Intel, version 8.1.1.1010.

Uh-huh... I bet that Dload fixes the problem. I was having that issue with my LG775 board!

and it is now fixed.

go back into your bios settings after the updates... what do your USB controllers settings say?

That update and BIOS flash were both done with my most recent install of XP, I was pretty confident that that'd fix the problem, but the symptoms are still the same...

The motherboard I'm using is pretty simple, so there aren't many settings in there... here's what I've got though:
--------------------------------------------
-Onboard USB Controller: Enabled
-Onboard USB 2.0 Controller: Enabled
-USB Keyboard: Enabled
-USB Mouse: Enabled
--------------------------------------------
-System BIOS Cachable: Disabled
-Video BIOS Cachable: Disabled
--------------------------------------------
-AC'97 Audio: Enabled
--------------------------------------------
-Onboard LAN Boot ROM: Disabled
--------------------------------------------

Here're my current IRQ assignments; these shouldnt matter because I'm not running anything through serial, but I'll post anyways:
-----------------------------------------------------------
-Onboard Serial 1: 3F8, IRQ is assigned to 4
-Onboard Serial 1: 2F8, IRQ is assigned to 3
-Onboard Paralell: SPP
-----------------------------------------------------------

Here're my current voltages; this's after running for a while, with everything warmed up and no devices connected (except VGA monitor, PS2 keyboard, USB mouse), read through the BIOS:
--------------------------------------------
-VCore: 1.34-1.36VDC
-(+3V): 3.47-3.45VDC
-(+5V): 5.03-5.21VDC
-(+12V): 12.34-12.52VDC
-Vbat: 3.15-3.20VDC
-5VSB: 5.09-5.16VDC
--------------------------------------------
