Where do they come up with the trailer weight and max GCWR numbers? The GCWR would mean that the most the truck and trailer combined can weigh is 22,000#, right (For the 2500HD and 3500)? Max trailer for the 2500HD is 12,000#. Truck weighs in at about 7000#, depending on what's in it. 7000 + 12,000 = 19,000. Where's the other 3,000#? Am I the only one that thinks something doesn't add up?

That 12K is off the "bumper" hitch. I don't think the factory hitch is even rated that high unless you use weight distribution. Even then it is not regarded as a very rugged hitch. Using 5th wheel or gooseneck you can max out the GCWR as long as the hitch you have it rated for it, and you do not exceed your gvwr with pin weight of the trailer (which you would most likely do with a 2500HD)

Go the other way, take the 22,000 GCVWR and subtract the actual weight of your truck set up to tow. You stated 7,000 lbs. 22,000 - 7,000 = 15,000 lbs. Of course the more your truck weighs the less you can tow if you want to stay within the GVWR & GCVWR.

Nope, for the 3500 DRW GCWR is 23500.:D

The 12000 is due to the ratings of the factory hitch reciever, and that is if your doing a weight distribution hitch. There are many hitches rated higher you can replace the factory hitch with.

I believe that 12K limit is based on a class 5 hitch, not a fifth wheel. There should be a max weight for a fifth wheel listed also, depending on what you're looking at.
:exactly: Look in the owners manual it will give the 5th wheel/ gooseneck combo towing weights for your truck.

Agreed, that's one possibility for finding the information. There are others, such as Trailer Life, etc., but heaven forbid anyone use the owners manual from GM as a source for information. If people were to read that, well, half the questions of the forum wouldn't be on here! Then what would we do?
