Does any one know what the max weight for bumper towing is on a GMC Sierra 3500 Dually 4x4. Can I safely tow up to 16000 pounds with weight distributing hitch and sway bars.

GM says that the maximum for the 2500HD and 3500 equipped with the 6600 Duramax is 12,000 lbs with a WD hitch. I suspect that this is probaly a limitation of the OEM platform hitch.

hitch

If I were to change the hitch to a different hitch that is rated up to 16,000 pounds, would it be safe?

You'll need a class v hitch and it should be alright. A friend of mine hauls a 38' boat that wieghs 15k and 2 bikes on the front. Not sure how much the trailer weighs but it is a 40' steel trailer.

Check out the Reese Titan. 16,000 lbs is pretty heavy for a tag, with the recommended 10-15% tounge weight I'd try to get all the hitch I could. I've heard of the OEM hitch plates seperating from RVers who have lost their trailers.
