This seems to be quite the topic. I want to do a better intake for my 96 6.5 but I'm not sure what I want to do. Do I try to make my own, if so how should I, should I get a K47, if so show me how you mounted it and how it pulls air. Does the K47 give you some whistle because right now I can tell you I have no whistle . Any and all ideas are welcome

The stock GM-X Turbo is not a real big noise maker to begin with..
Making sure that all of your Turbo system is in tip-top shape will help.

The k47 intake is larger by comparison to the square airbox the 96' has.
It will handle a larger volume of air into and has a round air filter vs the flat square box filter of the 96'.

The one thing Diesel need is LOTS of air.

I believe I have the GM-5 turbo. Is that what you were referring too when you said GM-X or we're there newer turbos I don't know about? And what should I check in my turbo system to make sure it is in tip-top shape?

K47 has cylindrical filter comes from 97+ truck.

Unfortunately, the gasser and diesel have different air box and the diesel airbox is harder to come by.

S&B filter makes a box that are ready to install but it is pricy running around $300.

Could I run a gasser air box? And what's the difference?

Gasser air box has the engine side opposite of the diesel box.
Another tidbit is that the actual "K47" option is just the larger filter element. To search on car-part.com look for 97-99 diesel airbox. The diesel air boxes are all the same. If you end up getting one from a junkyard be sure they have ALL the pieces[turbo to fender]. It is common for the latches to break or fall off. The latches from the flat panel air box are the same. I have bought several and not paid over $75 for any of them.

Agreed, unless you're in the midst of dumping a ton on performance upgrades, the difference alone isn't going to be necessary or noticeable.

On that note, I do have a flat K&N that I bought for my first 6.5 (which was a 95 ext cab p/u) just sitting on the shelf...

Tell me, what are your daily driving conditions?
Be specific, as your answer will determine whether or not I recommend this K&N vs standard disposable paper filter.
If you fit the bill I'll sell it to you cheap

16 years old and a truck like this?

Prepare to buy lots of tools if you want to keep it around. :D
