Hey guys, I have been on the board for a little over a year now but this is my first time posting. I have had been able to gather a lot of great info on this board that helped me in fixing some previous issues with my truck but this time I'm not having as much luck I ran across some similar threads but they either had no resolution or seemed to be different enough that I didn't think they were the same issue. This is my first diesel so I don't have much experience with them, just a couple of tractors a few years back until I bought this truck.

Now on to the problem, it started 2 or 3 weeks ago when I came out of a store after say a half an hour and the truck fired right up as usual I put it in reverse start to back out and it died. Started right up again ran a few seconds and died again, after several cycles of this it finally stayed running and was fine for the next few days. This happened a couple of times and then I got stuck at Home Depot when it would not stay running after several attempts until I finally ran the battery's down. About an hour later I got a jump and it fired right up and got me home no trouble. I replaced the batteries as I new they were going even before this and hoped that would fix it but no luck there.

The other day it left me stranded again and would not start at all so I had to leave it till the next day when it again fired right up and I drove home with no trouble. I can get it to do it regularly at this point by shutting it off and waiting around a 1/2 hour when engine has cooled to say 150 degrees to try restarting and gauranteed I will have trouble.

What I have confimed so far:
New batteries with cleaned connections (turns over very well)
Cleaned ground connections (though they looked good before)
Lift pump seems to be working fine (I haven't put a gauge on it to check pressure but I get plenty of fuel if I open the pet**** while the engine is running or during wait to start)
Codes (getting p1621 and p1214)
Fuel filter changed (after problems showed up)
Glow plugs (checked 5 of them and they are showing between 5 and 8 ohm's obviously I should check the other 3 and plan to do so but I don't think it's the gp's as it fires up great when cold)
Air filter has about 300 miles on it

The truck had 58k miles on it when I got it and didn't appear to have had any work done on it, it now has 83k miles and I haven't made any mod's so it is completely stock so far as I know.

Sorry for the long post and thanks for any help you guys can give and for the help I have received in the past through reading others threads this is a great forum.

Well, your p1214 code is a IP timing offset code, which would lead me to believe that your timing is off, If you have GMTDScan hook it up and see what you get or take it too the dealer and have them hook it up to see whats going on with your timing, also your p1621 is ECM - Control Module Long term memory performance code, sorry, i cant enlighten you on that one, im sure some of the gurus will pipe up and tell you what you need to do.

Have you got a spare PMD to test with?

Unfortunately not, I considered picking one up to test with, figuring if it was not the problem I would have a spare but they aren't cheap as I'm sure you know.

Anyone know if it's possible, since I'm getting a code indicating incorrect IP timing, for the IP timing to go off on it's own as it has not been messed with? Or would this code more likely be caused by some issue other than the timing actually being off? Hope that makes sense.

Also the extended IP warranty is that on all the IP's or just the earlier years?

how many miles on your engine? Any major components replaced that you know of?
83k miles on the truck and it hasn't had any major work done on it since I bought it at 58k miles. Can't be sure what was done prior to that.

P1621 indicates the PCM has lost it's memory - P1214 verifies that.

Take your truck to the dealer for a reflash, or get a performance upgrade if the price is comparable ~600bucks.
