I recently had a hard start problem on my 83 6.2 L. It resulted in the inner starter bolt pulling the threads out of the block.

Would any one have a good way to fix this problem other than a heli-coil.

oddly enough i had a similiar problem. my inner bolt with the bracket had competely come out and it caused my starter to twist itself enough to SHEAR the external bolt completely (and it fell on the ground) to get the resta my bolt off (left in the block i believe) i had to use and "ez out" but its a case hardened bolt, so be aware....you break the "ez out" and there is no easy way out! hope it all works out for yah.

the bolt completely pulled the threads out too? i was lucky and mine didn't do all that.... my suggestion would be do rethread it (obviously...) last i knew you could purchase soemthing at like Lowe's that will do the job for you.

that or just use the next size up on a tap (dont forget to drill out the starter too) make sure that the brace w/ bracket on the end of the starter is attached so it dont torque itself loose again (that's why mine twisted i'm assuming)

but it was fun to start the truck and then outta habit look under it and watch a 5in bolt fall to the ground... good times

Yeah they have those neat rethreading tools that attach to drills. They are pretty cool was helping a friend rethreat the holes in his tranny cause those bolts messed up the threads.

There is a threaded insert similar[sp] to a heli coil but it is solid steel [threaded on the inside and outside],not like a heli coil that is like a spring and weak in my opinion for a starter bolt repair. I used one years ago to repair the starter bolt threads in a 6.2 and it lasted about 3+ years until truck was sold and is probably still working today? When I remember/find the name of this type insert I will post back here with the info.

If one is to go to the trouble of tapping the block up to another size, why install a heli-coil or other device, why not just use a larger diameter bolt that matches your retapped block size? You can enlarge the bolt hole in the starter if necessary for the larger bolt.

Personally I like to keep factory type bolts so I can use the same wrench on them when working on the truck. I also wouldn’t want to have to enlarge the starter hole every time I replaced it.
