Smoke under hood

I have been noticing smell of fuel from under my hood lately and today at a stop light I noticed it idling a bit higher and smoke coming out from under the hood and smoke coming out the passenger side air vent. The day before I was towing my boat and noticed a strange sound around 2500 rpm and something rattled on my foot pedal. Is it possible the downpipe is the cause?

I would start by checking exhaust manifolds, turbo and downpipe connections first (y)
Sounds like it has an exhaust leak below/after the location where the 9th fuel injector is installed.
Probably leaking out some of the fuel injected for regen, and then the fuel is smoldering on the outside of the exhaust pipe. If so, there will be black evidence of this at the leak location.

When it is in 'regen' (cleaning the exhaust filter) it will idle higher.
