I have noticed when moving along the road, that when I want to shift from 2 wheel to 4 wheel, and back again to 2 wheel, the manual shift lever is sometimes very difficult to move. Is this normal, and should I be at a stop to do it? I am talking about shifting just into high range 4 wheel, not low range. Dabney P.S. Where should I enter this thread on this site? Please tell me if I put it in the wrong place,

Never noticed that when shifting from 2HI to 4HI and back again. If the shift lever seems stiff, maybe there is a linkage problem. Possibly due to a trans mount being loose and when the transfer case is engaged, the tranny is moving out of position, causing a kink in the linkage.

manual shift lever ??
That is that lever on the floor of a REAL 4wd truck:D .

Is it hard to shift from a stop also? If so I would check the linkage. If it is only while moving like the others said let off first. I used mine saturday nite and did not notice any diff. from rolling or a stop.

I specified a manual this time because I had gotten stuck a few times in the 01 when I would push the button and it would just blink at me even after replacing that expensive switch assembly  . No thank you.

I wanted manual, but I think it may have cost extra. Could you get lock-out hubs with manual? That would be the way to go!

My 03 GMC had a manual shift t-case and it always shifted smooth but with just enough resistance to where it felt like you were shifting something. You might want to check your linkage look for any foreign objects or if there is too much play. My 2006 has push button which just yesterday took 6 pushes of the button to get it into 4-lo.

were you in neutral in the trans foot off the brake when trying to shift into 4lo. the manual 4wd shifter can seem tight at times but does not normally indicate a problem. you are engaging and disengaging a set of stright cut gears and if you are on the gas while shifting the gears can bind slightly

I talked to a fellow the other day who has the "pushbutton" electronic transfer case option on his 2006 2500 HD. I would like to know if it is subject to electronic problems down the road (pun) after the truck is several years old. My 2006 2500HD with the Duramax/Allison came with the hand operated manual lever on the floor, like 4X4 have had for many, many years. I am of the opinion the manual lever will be much more trouble free as the truck becomes older. What are the opinions of all you who have either one of the transfer shifting systems? Dabney

There are some encoder motor sensor issues.....and some dash button issues, but nothing major.

A shift lever is by far more reliable.......less complicated parts! Good luck finding one, hardly ANYONE wants one anymore.

The manual lever still has an eletric from actuator (donkey ****)....just like push button....and you can upgrade the older 4x4 too if you have the nitrogen filled unit.

No manual lock outs.....the front half shafts are splined into the hubs and bolted to the output shafts of the front diff...were a shift fork locks the front case in.

I had the same problem to the point of where it would feel like it was Locked into place.

I took mine into the stealer and the service manager was able to replicate it. The brought it to the back and the service tech moved it in and out like 30 times they said and it seemed to loosen it up

However, if u manually put it in 4wd LOW put it in neutral and make the wheels as straight as possible, otherwise it will bind right off the bat. He said that was a problem.

First I would get under your truck and liberally spray white lube or similiar juice on all your linkage.Remember, there are no synchros in a T-case,so sometimes shifting can be testy. You might have to trick it some to get into and out of 4LO by stopping, going from D-N-R,back to N,while you're trying each time to engage. For on the fly to and from 4HI,just momentarily let off the gas while you shift the T-case--should pop right in.Honestly though,I don't miss the manual lever at all-buttons are much nicer. My GM mechanic bud convinced me a few trucks ago that the solenoids are designed much better than earlier units where snow would sometimes freeze them up.Flawless to date.

The push button ones & the floor level work the same. They are both electronical controlled. They are not like the old style on the floor ones.
