Service manager on add-ons.

Wrote an email to the service manager where I hope to be buying a Dmax soon, regarding add-ons and factory warranty. His reply seems to be pretty open minded. Hopefully he will remain open minded if something were to go wrong.

Monte,

I will be ordering an '04 Duramax from Dan in January or Februauy. I
plan on doing a few things to the truck and want to know how said things
will affect my factory warranty.

Will the following affect or void my factory warranty?

1)Addition of a downpipe back 4" stainless exhaust utilizing factory
hangers.

2)Addition of LT-265/75/R16 tires on the factory PYO wheels.

3)Cranking up the front torsion bars to level the truck front to back (and
having an alignment done afterwards).

4)Replacing the OEM air filter element with an oilable open-cell foam
element (retaining OEM air filter housing).

5)Addition of in-cab guages (and associated wiring) to monitor pre turbo
exhaust gas temperatures and turbo boost.

6)Addition of a post-OEM, 2-micron, secondary fuel filter (either
Caterpillar or Raecor brand).

7)Use of an emulsifying type (non alcohol containing) fuel additive
(Primrose 405 and 409 brand).

I would truly appreciate it if you would answer as to the affects each of
these would have on my factory warranty.

Thanks,

Josh

JOSH, HOPEFULLY I CAN ANSWER ALL YOUR QUESTIONS. IF THE EX KIT IS
DISTRIBUTED FROM A REPUTABLE MANUFACTURER THERE GENERALLY IS NO PROBLEM WARR
WISE. IF THE SYSTEM WAS THE CAUSE OF A MECHANICAL FAILURE THEN THE WARR
WOULD BE VOID. MOST AFTERMARKET SYSTEMS HAVE BEEN TESTED AND ARE OF QUALITY.
I WOULDN'T WORRY TOO MUCH ABOUT THAT. IF A LOCAL EX SHOP IS DOING IT I MIGHT
BE CONCERNED. TIRE SIZE SHOULDN'T BE AN ISSUE. UNFORTUNATELY THE DURMAX SET
UP DOESN'T ALLOW US TO CALIBRATE FOR THE TIRE SIZE LIKE THE GAS ENGINES DO .
MOST CUST ARE OK WITH THE FACTORY SETTINGS. THIS MAY CHANGE ON THE 04'S.
DEFINITELY ALIGN AFTER TORSION BAR ADJUSTMENTSTHIS THEORETICALLY WOULD NOT
BE WARR BUT IF THE VEHICLE WAS OUT OF ALIGN BEFORE ADJUSTMENTS TO TORSION
BAR I 'M SURE WE COULD DO SOMETHING. I'VE SEEN SOME PROBLEMS WITH THE
AFTERMARKET OIL FILTER ELEMENTS. SOMETIMES EXCESS OIL WILL COLLECT ON THE
MAF SENSOR ASSEMBLY AND CAUSE PERFORMANCE PROBLEMS. MAY OR MAY NOT BE A
ISSUE IF THE FILTER IS OILED CORRECTLY. THE GUAGES SHOULD BE NO PROBLEM AS
LONG AS THE FACTORY WIRING HARNESS IS NOT DAMAGED AND THE CORRECT CIRCUITS
USED. FUEL FILTER AND ADDITIVE ARE OK. PLUMBING OF THE FILTER WOULD NEED TO
BE TOP NOTCH. THE FUEL SYSTEM IS SENSITIVE TO PRESSURE CHANGE. HOPE THAT
ANSWERS YOUR QUESTIONS. LET ME KNOW, THANKS, MONTE

Thanks Mackin I think it will be. The guys at the dealership seem like a good bunch of guys (for the most part anyway).

Josh
My service manager could be this guys twin. He is very open minded, even installed a chip in a customers truck and was impressed with the power it added!

There are a few good guys out there in spite of all the stuff we hear.

Bob
Son of a gun that's pretty cool that they'd be willing to install a chip. I intentionally didn't ask about power adders as I figured I would try to get to know them a little better then broach the subject.

Josh
Hey gmcslehd,

where about in colorado are you, Ive never heard of truck city service center. From the sound of it, seems to be a heck of a dealer.
ROCKYMTNDMAX I'm in Windsor. The dealership is Weld County Garage Truck City off of Hwy. 34 before Greeley.

Josh
hmmm, not to far away, I have not needed service yet, so I cant rate my dealers service dept yet.
GMCSLEHD--That is really a good service manager, and not to bust your bubble, but what are you going to do if you are on a trip out of state or out of range of this dealer and you break down and are towed to a not so friendly dealer. Just playing devil's advocate here.

TX-DMAX never really thought of that. I guess if that happens I'll be at the mercy of that dealer.
Hmm... hope I'll never have to find that out. Suppose thats the price of playing though. Maybe I could rent a big flatbed Dmax and haul it back home.

My dealer here in Oregon has a 'pro shop'. They will add just about anything (4" exhaust, gauges, air boxes, chips and even nitro) as long as they are involved (as in get money) in the purchase and install. They will match competative pricing to some degree as well. However, they will only install it the way they feel comfortable with. For example, the would not install my pyro pre-turbo, only post-turbo. They say they will still honor the warranty unless you totally obuse it. Remains to be seen! And what happens when you go to another dealer is up to luck.
