With my Powerstroke I had to monitor the coolant with test strips and add SCA if needed. Nowhere have I read that this is required of Duramax. Why is this?

Depends on if it's a silicate free coolant or not. The only antifreeze that requires the addition of SCA/DCA are the old green antifreeze's. The newer extended life coolants do not require regular addition of these additives. Most heavy truck/tractors that use extended life antifreeze have boosters that are added around 100K.
