I was messing around the other day with some red diesel and was trying to remove or hide the red. I would much rather remove it so as not to raise questions as to why my fuel is black or something.

But anyways I tried to hide it with 2 stroke oil and I concluded that it would take way too much to do this.

I know that some people use waste oil to hide it and there is no way that I am going to do this because I personally think it's bad.

So I just want to know if anybody has tried or heard of any other ways to remove the red.. and preferably not an expensive way as that will completley defeat the purpose of buying red in the first place.

I 'heard' that leaving it out in the sun (open) will cause the dye to leave.

I have no idea if it is true.

I have no idea how you would go about this? But I heart that as well as being easily identafied by the obvious colour, the DOT's have some kind of binocular device that will identify dyed diesel, by looking through this device @ the exhaust? I have no idea if this is legit, but I was told this by a very knowledgable man. He might have been pulling my chain though?

I work in the oilfield in Canada, and have to deal with the DOT's during rig moves. The guy that told me was telling me as a warning after a rough neck filled the rig with dyed diesel!

Has anyone else ever heard of this before?

Maybe it's like telling kids that the pool has clorein in it that will turn the water red if the pee! My parents used to tell all the kids this that came over to our house to go swimming. (My sister and I knew it was a lie because we tried first time we heard it!) This time all the diesel drivers are the kids? Ya think?

I don't know too many people that have been caught, but I heard it takes a long time to rid the system of the dye!

Probably best to just pay the tax and stick with the clear!

There is some kind of chemical they apply to the stick that detects the dye in REALLY low concentrations.

Otherwise, if everyone got together, we could piss them off and make a fuel dye you can ADD to your fuel

I once read in the local paper that a gallon of sulfuric acid would settle the dye out of an entire tanker truck of fuel and that there were wholesalers doing it to make the extra bucks when selling it to retailers. Not sure I would want that acid in my fuel system, but it might be an interesting experiment.

IF they found trace amounts on your exhaust, couldn't you just say that yes, you DO run red dye when you're doing all off-road work @ a construction site or something? maybe say that you have to leave it running because you can use it as a generator or something? and then switch to normal #2 when you're done?

Theoretically you should be able to switch back and fourth as you enter and exit public roads. But red dye doesnt know the diff.

I would bet that even if you had two tanks to switch between, you would still be in question.

Quick and easy way to have your Dmax ported and polished! Might need new rings and other parts after though?

The only differance in #2 and O.R. is the dye and sulfur content. If they could tell that you are running dyed through your exhaust, then they wouldnt need to dip tanks any longer. Trust me, the IRS dips tanks at my local farm/tractor expo every year or two.

I'm sure that dyed diesel is too. When getting fuel delivered this winter to my location I asked the fuel truck driver this? He said that it all is ULSD now because it only takes 1L of the old style diesel to contaminate over 10,000L of the ULSD. And since they can't promise that no one would ever make the mistake of putting the wrong product in one of the 4 tanks on a fuel truck, they have converted it all. This was only what I was told, and am not a diesel fuel tech. or anything, but I'm sure the guy hauling it around on public hi-ways would no for sure! TDG!

ive un dyed diesel by filling a glass jar and setting it out in the sun. took a week or so but it worked. ran it in my heater and it worked just fine.
ive also read on the net about people using acid to bleach out the dye. not sure how but google it and see what you come up with

We need to find a good way cause red fuel is a lot cheaper,at least where I live.

It is probably not a good idea to leave the fuel in the sun then put it in your truck. The UV light from the sun causes a lot of chemical reactions to take place, and is therefore changing the chemistry of your fuel with unknown consequences. Just because you can only see the chemical reaction causing the red dye to dissappear, does not mean that other reactions you can't see are not also happening.
