I was reading somewhere that its a good idea too remove the glow plugs and crank it over a few times before actually attempting too start the truck after it's been rolled. Can anyone shed some light on this information?? Have rebuilt alot of rolled duramax's and never have done that but wondered if I did this what it would prevent or what good it would do??

Disable electrical by removing batteries. Turn engine over by hand to see if there is any hydro lock or debris locking up the engine before the starter and firing of a cyl bends rods.

The basis of the suggestion is how long did the truck sit upside down and how much oil leaked into the combustion chambers? The glow plug removal will allow the oil to escape without hydro lock. Oil also burns and can cause run away.

^^^^x2, same concept as pulling the spark plugs out of a snowmobile after it has sunk. Pull it over until no more water comes out, put plugs back in, and try to start. All it does is prevent hydro-lock.

Thanks alot for the explanation. Sounds like some work but I'm sure is worth it considering the small amount of time it takes too remove the glow plugs or else have a ruined engine. Out of all the rollovers we have done only one ran away on us, so was thinking there should be a way too prevent that and this looks like the key.
So do you crank the engine over by hand when you have the glow plugs removed or do you hook the batterys back up and crank with the key??

Well it won't drain out per se, but it provides a release for all the pressure that would be caused from the compression/air/oil.

Take out the glow plugs and crank it over to blow the oil out.

And DON'T have your helper eye balling the engine from the side while cranking:rolleyes:. I stuff rags down over all the holes to prevent oil from goin' everywhere.

Have a question, got in a 2008 LMM that was hit on the side, when we got it, it started right up with no issues, anyway we've been driving around the lot some, so got it all together and took it for a test drive down the road, everything sounded alright except for a rumbling sort of noise, and also it was burning off white smoke out the exhaust when we got back, like oil got in somewhere. So was revving it up some and all of sudden it started revving up higher than what we had the pedal down almost like it was going too run away?? So I quickly shut it off and thankfully it shut down without running off. Should we remove the glow plugs before we attempt starting it again?? Would sure appreciate any thoughts on this, as don't know what too do
