Hey guys


I need to change out my rear wheel seal on an 02 dually. How are the axles removed? Are they like the old chevy diffs or is there a new procedure? any help would be great

<H1>Rear Axle - Disassemble 11.5 Inch Axle</H1>
<UL ="BULLET">Tools Required
<LI>J 2222-C Wheel Bearing Nut Wrench
<LI>J 8614-01 Flange/Pulley Holding Tool
<LI>J 24429 Side Bearing Backlash Spanner
<LI>J 44421 Pinion Remover </LI>[/list]




  1. <LI ="1">Remove the rear axle fill plug and the seal.



    <LI ="1">Remove the rear axle drain plug.
    <LI ="1">Drain the lubricant into a suitable container.
    <LI ="1">Inspect the drain plug for excessive metal particle accumulation. This accumulation is symptomatic of extreme wear.



    <LI ="1">Remove the axle flange bolts.
    <LI ="1">Lightly tap the axle shaft with a soft-faced hammer in order to loosen the shaft.
    <LI ="1">Grip the rib on the axle shaft flange with a locking pliers. Twist the axle shaft flange in order to start the axle shaft removal.
    <LI ="1">Remove the axle shaft from the axle housing.
    <LI ="1">Remove the gasket.
    <LI ="1">Clean the axle shaft flange and the outside face of the hub assembly.



    <LI ="1">Remove the rear axle housing cover bolts.
    <LI ="1">Remove the rear axle housing cover from the axle housing.



    <LI ="1">Measure the amount of torque required to rotate the pinion. Use an inch-pound torque wrench. Record this measurement for reassembly. This will give the combined preload for the following components:
    <UL ="BULLET">
    <LI>The pinion bearings
    <LI>The pinion seal
    <LI>The differential case bearings </LI>
<LI ="1">Draw 2 arrows pointing at each other, one on the pinion stem, the other on the pinion yoke.
<LI ="1">Record the number of exposed threads on the pinion stem for reference.

Ya but you dont have to remove the rear cover just the bolts on the axle end

damn I wish I had a password to that service.gm.com site.... sure could be useful!!

















good info..... not sure why you need to remove the pinion or diff cover to chance a wheel seal.... but maybe i missed somthing in the post.

I picked up the CDs on ebay for $40

I was just looking at the drawings of this procedure, and was wondering if the brake rotor comes off the hub or is this all one piece?
