I have 36,700 miles on my 02. It started leaking motor oil recently. It looks like it is coming from around the rear main seal area. It isn't much, just about 2" spot overnight. The engine oil seemed a little thin (not too sure), but after an oil change it still leaked the same. Oil level is not rising, so I assume it is just a leaking seal and not an injector leak thinning the oil. The oil doesn't smell like diesel to me, but I've been around diesels so long that even diesel fuel doesn't smell like diesel anymore.

It's going to the dealer on Tuesday. I still have the 5/100 engine warranty until 3/20/07. I wanted to know if this was common, or is there something else I should be concerned about. I'd like to know as much as I can before hand so that I can be prepared for what the dealer might try and tell me. I want to make sure I get everything fixed before warranty dies.

My '04 had to have the rear main seal replaced at 36,000 and at 46,000 the rear main seal housing was replaced. Oil was dripping out of the weep hole at the bottom of the transmission bell housing. First time, they couldn't get the truck to start after repair. The story goes that when they pulled the transmission, the engine shifted in its mounts far enough to break a ground wire at "G102 -- Right Side" I forgot to mention---when I first took it in, they put some dye in the oil and had me drive it a few days before they would look for the leak. The dye is supposed to help them pinpoint the source of the leak.

Mine started dripping from the bell housing, dealer found oil pan bolt (1) loose.
Said they did not have time to change gasket that day so he just tightened bolt. That was at about 20K miles. Cleaned area and it's been dry ever sense. Have 58K now, I just don't believe in repairing things that are not broken. Seems like you come out with more problems than you go in with. Good luck on your leak.

Well, it sounds like others have had similar leaks too. I thought 36,000 miles was a little soon to be having a rear main leak, but it is good to know that billb3857 had his changed at 36,000 too. Hopefully, I shouldn't have any surprises from the dealer. Thanks
