Hi All,

Well, I installed the Racor filter kit from Greg at Lube Specialist this weekend and I am very happy with it. I was very impressed with the kit and had no trouble installing it. This means a lot coming from a guy who rarely does more than change the oil and check the tires. It took me a few minutes to figure out the that I needed the 30A fuse for the accessory power lug, but other than that I was installed and on the road in about an hour and a half. Thanks Greg.

Oh, and just out of curiosity, what sort of change interval are people running with the pre OEM setup like this? Thanks.

Thanks for the note HeavyD...I'll be installing mine over Memorial Day Weekend. Glad to hear the install went well. Did much fuel spill when you cut the line?

What micron rating filter are you running? If it is the 2 micron, you will change more frequently than the 10. I change my 2 micron every 10K, but I really need to cut one open to see what it looks like. 10K might be too long for many - my usual fuel is pretty good. The last change came early due to a really dirty load of fuel in Blyth. Always carry a spare, as that will happen to you at some point.

Roegs - I spilled enough fuel to be glad I wasn't in my driveway. Part of my problem was that I had a pretty full tank at the time. I would definitely recommend getting the filter all mounted and ready before cutting the line.

Tom - You think 10k might be too long? Greg at Lube Specialist told me 15-30 in an email, with 20k being average. I was planning on at least 10k. BTW, I am running the 2 micron. I understand that the filter is a cheap way to prevent bad things, but I am also not interested in changing filters just to change them.

A lot will depend on the fuel you are buying. When mine got bad fuel, it just ran worse and worse, but did not totally crap out. I always carry a spare filter and the wrench so I can change on the road. It is a given that at some point you will get bad fuel. I would try 10K and see how it goes.

Racor

Did you install the filter only kit or did it have the optional water sensor and/or heater?

Question:
Since this is a pre OEM set-up is there a real need for the water sensor or heater?

Hope this isn't a stupid question:eek:

I opted for both in my kit because I didn't want my filter to freeze in cold weather. Diesels that won't go in cold weather are a real nuisance!

You can't be too careful about water in the fuel...

I have changed mine at 10K miles, and that was way too soon. The filter was only about 1/4 used. I'm probably going to use 20K mile changes, and I think even that is conservative.

How much longer can you extend the OEM filter interval with the pre-filter installed. The pre will be easier to change, In theory, if you are using a 2 micron pre, the OEM should last a really, really, long time. Just want to get some opinions. I plan on adding an aux filter and also lift pumps eventually.

Thanx

I just changed my OEM filter on thursday with 20k miles on it, & it wasn't even 1/3 used up. But I've changed it before with 25k on it & it was pretty much completely dark. If I were you, I'd go 20k & cut it open to see how it looks, & adjust your change interval accordingly.
